Picked up a Quarter stick to replace the ProMatic ratchet the previous owner had in the car. I was hoping to use the same cable but the ends are completely different so will swap in the new cable. My question is, the ProMatic sat too far forward for my comfort and the previous owner had drilled a LOT of holes (Swiss cheese anyone?) so I would like to move it rearward about 6" for comfort and solid mounting. The existing cable (assuming 5' like the new one) does not seem to have a lot of slack so I am worried 6" rearward might be too far. Anyone with any experience in this area care to comment, don't want to add even more holes only to have to move the shifter again.

I put a plate over my manual hole when I converted to auto. The supplied cable was long enough from there, but with that said a 6 foot cable would have wrapped right around the front of the mini starter getting it further away from the headers. The way the cable routes from the front puts it too close to the headers for my taste. I wrapped my cable with header wrap and that 3M silver heat tape and so far I have no issues. I think leaving the cable bare you are asking for trouble if you have headers. Good luck.

Put it in today and was able to easily move it back 6" for better positioning. Shifter feel is great and works perfectly. Feels better to me than the ratchet. Kind of annoying that Hurst used different cable ends and brackets forcing a complete change out, oh well all parts are new now I guess.

Aftermarket shifters can be a PITA. It always seems I have to order a cable for whatever one I use in a build. Glad ya got yours working. I also did the mods Wookie described on my wagon. No issues with the install or operation.

thanks mmissile, LOVE the question on your door panel

I actually use the B & M Pro Stick which looks like the Hurst Quarter Stick to me. I use a 1970 tans in my 63 as thats why I have an aftermarket shifter and dont use the push buttons. You can see about where I have it as its easy to grab and use where it is. Ron
