I am converting from an auto to 4 speed w/console. I am going to look at some used parts and the guy said he had some shifters. He told me some were aftermarket comp. plus shifters and he knew that a couple were from Road runners or chargers. He didn't know what years though. I really don't know what my options are. What shifter housings can I use. Can I use an aftermarket comp. plus housing and rebuild it with the correct levers? Or should I get a Mopar housing and rebuild that? Or do I have to get the correct e &b body shifter? I'm kinda over budget on the conversion and I still need the pedals and linkage so I'm trying to cut corners on the shifter if I can. Thanks in advance!

Don't cut corners on a shifter if you want to be able to have a good shifting transmission. But, a shifter for an E body does not use the same rods as a early B body does. In 70, the 833 got a tail shaft with two shifter mount locations. This was for the E body cars but also worked in the B cars but the pre 70 tail shaft won't work for the E body. What car do you have and what trans tail shaft is on the gear box? Once we know that, we can go from there. Be aware that the A body trans has a short tail shaft.....

don't quote me on this, but, the only difference on the hurst shifter, comp, should be the length of the shift linkage. the bolt pattern to bolt to the tranny should be the same. there should be lots of used linkages available to be had.
its been a lot of years since i have played with this stuff. guys on here will let you know. i have a hurst shifter and linkage that came with a mopar 4 spd tranny that i would let go if it is the right one. i went with the tremec tranny.

The trans is an 18 sp. with both bosses on the tailshaft so I'm ok there. It's going in a 72 Plymouth RR. w/console. I'm not trying to buy a cheap shifter but I am trying to save some cash. If I can buy a shifter body that I can rebuild and change the levers for my application that would be great. That way I wont have to spend a few hundred all at once. I know what rods I need I just want to know if I have more then one option in reguards to the shifter housing or body. I know I can buy the correct levers and all the parts to rebuild it so I really wont be cutting any corners. But I will be spending less because I can buy the shifter tomorrow and the parts I need in a week or two. I will be dishing out less cash in the long run and I will have a top quality shifter. Thanks.

Hurst Comp +, here...works well......B/W T 10....(original tranny) '63 ply "B'" body....I also use the original Hurst shift arm...
looks good too!

http://brewersperformance.com has all of the info you'll ever need! Either by looking at their store site for part numbers for the different years and what interchanges to calling them up and asking questions if you don't have money to buy anything from them. They were very helpful on a couple conversions I've done. So helpful that I ended up buying stuff from them.
Hope this helps,
Good luck!

Used to bolt the aftermarket Hurst shifters in place of the OEM versions all the time back in the old days. Throw lengths were a little different as I recall, shorter but worked well. Early pistol grip handles used snap-in rubber isolated mount on the OEM versions, remember having to drill bolt holes in the handles to fit them to the aftermarket shifter, again usually for the better.

Oh I forgot one thing. Can I get either style shifter (bolt on or slip in handle). It doesn't have to be correct it just has to work. No one will know unless they pull up the boot anyway. Thanks!
