Installing my 440?

I'm putting grade eight bolts in the intake, and hope to lift the assembly by snaking a chain under it.

What do you guys think? I think this engine weighs a thousand pounds?

Just an FYI, normal grade 5 (AN grade are 5's) will bend and deform before breaking. 8's just snap clean. I always shudder when some homebuilder tells me they bolted their prop on with Grade 8's!

That said, we've been lifting engines for decades on a wimpy chain attached to any 2 bolts we could find on the engine, I don't see why an entire intake won't hold.... but when that chain slips when tipping it in....

Chain and 2 bolts. Going under the intake may tear up the intake or even allow the engine to tip like dads bee said.

I use magic and wishes.. Naa I just use cross bolts on opposing heads Right rear and Left front or vise versa. Pretty stable but my hoist is out of whack and the whole rig leans left when I have an engine on it Harbor Freight 2 ton. I can't figure out how to correct it.

The intake probably would survive but....why risk it. Same way for the carb flange lifts... aluminum can strip easily. Sometimes aluminum intake carb threads are already marginal

Use the the bolts on the end of the heads or get longer intake bolts. Make sure you have enough threads regardless. Buy one of these. they make them w straps as well.

You guys got some NADS! I couldn't lift a Hemi & trans like that with an aluminum intake! I always
use a 1" nylon sling and three points if it's not a Mopar.

Every time this comes up there are the plate guys, chain guys, and the leveler guys. To each there own. I have all the lifting devices. Most of the time on a level drop I prefer the plate. Other times on a more severe tilt to drop in I use a leveler. Its common sense no mater what way you chose. My self , friends, and my shop had done many hundreds. Plate bashers need to do some reading on bolts and the plates. If they were so dangerous Summit, Jegs and all the rest would of never sold them. Most all levelers are CCJ. Cheap Chinese junk. I will bet those chains that come with them have no safety certification. Trust a 5/16 bolt or a Chinese 1/4 inch chain? Common sense. Intake iron or aluminum good threads and full fastener engagement. That should be 4 bolts 3/4 to 1 inch in the threads. Good bolts grade 5 or 8. A 5/16 bolt easily can hold 1,000 pounds. Times 4 most engine hoists could not lift enough to pull threads or break bolts. Most plates for safety are rated at 1,000 pounds. So use your head and save toes.

I use all the methods depending who's car or who's house we are at. I have used bolts in the intake or cross bolted in the heads. I also have a 4150 and a 4500 carb flange plates as well as an engine sling for my Hemi.

I used to pick and move hundreds of tons at my job and know that when you start moving that load from
vertical to sideways on a bolt, bad things can happen! A straight pull on four grade 5 bolts is fine, but when you
tilt that engine to slide it in, my heart starts to palpatate! I know it's done all the time, but i'm a chicken.
