Shoot, man...I can be a contender in that contest.
On Sunday, I ran out of MIG wire so I grabbed a roll that had some left to it. The welds fizzed and popped even worse than usual. I figured it was Flux Core instead of the copper solid stuff I now use.
The guy at the welding supply house confirmed it. The flux core wire is silver in color to identify it.
I really need to take a welding class or get some qualified person stand over me to show me what I am doing wrong.
Years back I watched a YouTube video of a guy buffing out the clearcoat on a car. Instantly I saw what I was doing wrong for years!

......and I'm rapidly becoming an expert in creating awesome porosity, and spatter.....but my grind work it stupid good.

in Kern Dog we trust.

Grind work...Yeah, me too.
In wood framing, we expect to have to go back and plane crooked studs, pad out low spots and generally "tune up" everything so it looks good once the sheetrock goes on.
I see some welds that people make and feel like mine are the work of a blind guy.

.....so I found this geezer on YouTube who has taught me so much with his clips, Fitzee's Fabrications.....so calm and confident. Explains everything, and with modest tools and expression. I feel lucky to have seen his works....as its helped mine.

My welds are far better than that. My trouble is with consistency. Right next to a great weld is one that looks like popcorn.
