Late style saginaw pump

I'm new to having power steering in a classic car. Is there supposed to be a little 'slop' in the shaft of a late style Saginaw pump? I noticed this when I was changing oil. The pulley can move back and forth a little.
All attachments are tight. The pulley doesn't wobble. No noises while car is running. Just has about 1/4 inch in and out 'slop'.
