LED headlights or HID

Hi guys. My 71 charger has really dismal headlights. I was thinking about getting an HID and relay set up, but then I remember somewhere I read about LED headlights for our old cars, which don't even need relays.
Mehta do people recommend? And where do I buy such setups?

The reason LEDs don't require them is because LEDs have a very low current draw. Mopar Action magazine had an article awhile back. The supplier didn't offer the small round headlights yet. They did have the large and small rectangle style and the 7" round ones. Maybe by now they have expanded?

LED or no I would run relays, if you have stock wiring. It's not just about "small" wires, it's about 50 year old wiring harnesses and terminals.

Please THINK before you jump into HID / similar (or for that matter LED) Get something that is DOT approved. Why?

What happens if "something happens?" You get "into" something, and maybe it's not your fault, even. Along comes a snotty lawyer and he notices that you have "headlights" and figures out they are not DOT

Could make things very uncomfortable.

Also, I can tell you this. As a crabby old guy who has to be the recipient of YOUR headlights blinding me, I am gonna be PISSED. I might just turn on the landing lights, and I am "dead" serious about that.

What are you saying? If we have the stock headlight system were legally liable our fault or not?

I installed a relay kit a few years ago and the difference is day and night, plus it takes a big load off the headlight switch. I couldn't justify the cost of the LED's. Good luck.

What he is saying your lights must be Department of Transportation approved. If an accident occurred due to the blinding of YOUR lights, you could be liable because you installed lights that were not approved by DOT.

I'm looking at the military LED's. Truck-lite makes them in 7".

A relay kit with stock lights is as good as most high-performance newer systems. And a helluva lot cheaper. $20 or less in relays, $20 or less in wire and connectors, and you're good to go.

Sweet. I think I'll start with just relays, then add HIDs later on if I want to.
Anyone know a place that sells a comprehensive kit? Or do I just do it myself?

Exactly. There's a lot of lights "lately" that are not DOT. Regardless of liability, some of them could blind someone into causing a wreck, and it might just involve YOU
