Does it matter if it's sideways, upside down or above the master cylinder?
 
The MC should be top most point of the system unless it's one of those custom hot rod MC's that can be beneath the calipers.

Sideways / upside down doesn't matter for function, it's just a solenoid so locked is locked, so long as flow direction is correct. That said, sometimes they're a real b!tch to bleed and sideways / upside down sure wont make it any easier.
