I don't think it really matters but ideally I'd think you'd want it upright and level or below the MC.

The MC should be top most point of the system unless it's one of those custom hot rod MC's that can be beneath the calipers.

Sideways / upside down doesn't matter for function, it's just a solenoid so locked is locked, so long as flow direction is correct. That said, sometimes they're a real b!tch to bleed and sideways / upside down sure wont make it any easier.
