You did your due diligence. Maybe it's a sign that something better is in your future. Good luck.

Thanks. This is definitely the perspective I'm trying to look at it through. A bit tough though with it so fresh.
Yeah it sucks...been there myself.
Yup. This is the 4th time it's happened to me. Sucky feeling, especially when I'm trying to be as reasonable and respectful as possible.

The seller even had some unusual expectations from me, which I attempted to oblige.

This whole thing stung a bit. Extraordinarily annoying.

That sucks man.
It is Craigslist though so you have to pounce when you see something.
What exactly were these unusual expectations ( red flag ) he wanted from you ?

Agree with it being a red flag. Sounds like he was tryin' to sneak something through. Wanted a cash commitment sight unseen (or thoroughly inspected).
Dollars to donuts, you're probably better off.

It sucks but "even after offering me first shot at it. I've been in contact with him since the day it was posted." Well if you've been in contact since the day it was posted & that day wasn't Today then you had your shot, You were sleeping when someone else was buying... Can't be sleeping if your serious... Just the way the market is....

It was posted last Friday. I contacted him Saturday.

He had an overseas buyer supposed to buy it by Wednesday. I was first in line in case it fell through (of course it fell through). Im in Chicago (6hrs from him). I told him I'd call him Tuesday night. I did and he said to give the buyer until end of day wed.

He called me at noon today (wed) and said he will show it to me Thursday between 12-130pm. That's the only time he had. Promised me I was first in line.

I reserved a lift at FullAuto (resto specialists) in Ann Arbor at noon. Inspection to take 45min-1hr(reasonably). I told him If it took longer, I'd show him physical proof of CASH on hand, and i'd get a hotel room and reconvene with him the next day to finalize it at the bank on his lunch break. Then I'd drive it home.

I made plans with work, mechanic, girlfriend, etc. Kept texting him in the meantime to fully confirm noon next day.

He sold it at 430pm, without notifying me.

Our texts back and forth are infuriating. Whoever he sold it to is probably going to attempt to flip it soon after redoing the interior.

Did he actually have a car for sale or just someone's pictures...
I thought about that possibility. He had it worked on at a local shop which had it's pics on Google. You can see it pop up for FullAuto in Ann arbor. The guy Mike (super cool guy by the way) confirmed it was indeed real, through his service records.

I never heard of a 3-speed column-shifted '70 RoadRunner. I know that Plymouth (and Dodge ) cheaped out in 1970 by offering the 3-speed manual transmission as standard equipment instead of the previously offered 4-speed, but always thought it had a floor mounted shifter.
I’ve never seen one of those either. 318 and /6, yes. But not a 383. Has anyone else ever seen that configuration?

I did, and thank you guys for the warm welcome. If anyone sees this post that has a 70 for sale, let me know! I'll consider all cars (even without paint/ drivetrains etc) if the price is realistic. I want to do a restomod anyways.

It was a 727 torqueflight as far as I'm aware. He never sent me the fender Tag when I asked for it though. So I don't know full build specs.

I posted about his expectations above. I was definitely ready to roll whenever the word was given. It was a weird circumstance.

That makes sense. The 3 speed (Ford) manual trans was floor shifted. I saw they only made 500. So most got the TF or the 883.

What? ford?

There seems to be a "thing" lately about calling an automatic trans a "three speed" and sometimes not not specifying it's an automatic, or not having the word "automatic" as the next word.

Not sure when that started but it's been going on for a few years.

Most of us would write "383, auto on column", not "383, three speed column shifted" and then have "auto" somewhere else in the description.

...but that's what a lot of listings are like these days.

Idk. I never had one. I thought I read the 3 speed manual was sourced from Ford. Three of my cars have the 18 spline New Process A883 4 speed manual.

Sorry, I was running around trying to plan for the trip yesterday, and worded one of my replies wrong. I stated it was a 3 on the tree but I should have said it was a column shifted 3sp auto. My fault, sorry for the confusion.

I would guess the next caller offered more than asking or they dropped what they were doing and looked at it. If it's a fair deal, we can't hesitate. I've had it happen as I was driving to look at something. The other potential buyer said: "I'll take it", and I was out.

To prevent this, I get the seller to commit to giving me first refusal as I will have to take the time and spend money to come look. I will offer to come right now, if I can, or the next day. This gives the seller a little confidence in my intensions. I say: If somebody calls, tell them what is going on and take their number in case I pass. I am very serious, but can't buy it sight unseen. Most people are good and will stand by their word. Communication and following through it key.
