I have a 1970 Dodge Charger RT. Fender tag for the rear diff is A33. From that I believe it is a Dana 60 with 3.54:1 Track Package. I use the car mainly for highway driving and find that it revs quite high when cruising. Would like to change the diff ratio and believe you can get 3.23:1 ring gear for these diffs. Could someone please point me in the right direction to purchase. Am i correct in saying they are a 9.75 diff with a 29 spline count. New to this so trying to get my head into the game. I have built plenty of 4wd diffs over the years and have always found determining the correct parts is the biggest hurdle.
Also need to replace the rear drive shaft universal as there is a little side ways movement in it. How do I know what universal I need. So many to choose from out there.
Look forward to some feedback.
Cheers

Get a hold of Cass, he’ll have the parts you need.

Just because your fender tag says a certain rear end is in your car, doesn’t mean a previous owner didn’t replace it. Look at the picture and see which one matches yours.

Your best bet is pulling the cover and verifying what gear you have. Could have been changed out at some point. Ratio will be stamped on the ring gear. A 3.54 should be bearable on the highway. Your U joint would be a 7690 if stock.

I've verified the ratio by turning the drive shaft by hand and seeing the wheel rotation. There is also a tag on one of the cover bolts that says 3.54. Im pretty sure thats what it is without pulling anything apart. It is bearable but would be nice to get the revs down when cruising. Petrol pretty expensive in NZ.
I've ordered a new 3.23 gear set from Cass.
U joint? Cass said it would be a 7290.
You say a 7690. Any advances on those numbers.

if for sure you have the 3.54 gear in your Dana 60 going to 3.23 is only going to lower your cruise rpm by about 200-250 rpm at 65 mph ,, not really worth the change as the money spent ( $1000.00 - $1500.00+ ) for the rebuild will still buy a decent amount of gas for a car that is only driven now and then ,, if your Dana had 4.10 gears yes going to 3.23 would make more sense.

Maybe adding an overdrive is what you really need.

In my buddies Charger, we added a 5sp manual, which lowered the RPMs while cruising on the highway.
