Installed a RobbMC started last Friday and everything was going great. Went to start the car this morning and the starter wouldn't turn over. All other power was good (interior lights, radio, dash lights). No clicking of the starter or anything. I then connected a remote starter switch and the starter turned over. I removed the switch and then it started from the car. About 5 mins go by and I tried the ignition again and got nothing at the starter. I then made sure all my connections were good at the starter. Which they were.

I still can't get the starter to turn over. Starter relay?

It sure sounds like the relay but could be your ignition switch, Next time it wont start with the key use a screwdriver and try the starter by jumping the relay, if it starts there (engages starter) it could be your ignition switch. Another thing to try would be do the same and as your holding the screw driver on the relay wiggle all the wires around there you can reach to make sure there isint one broke or not making a connection every time like the wires in the middle/bottom picture. other then these things make sure all your grounds are good.. This is where i would start maybe someone could add something else. Good luck.

Thanks Ron. I'll start there.

Here are some other pics.

These are the 3 wires going to the starter. I'm currently putting a new end on the negative wire.

The main lead has a hole in the insulation.

No start.....

Might take a look at the netural safety switch on the trans.

move the gear selector to netural and try again.....

Starting?????

My 70 RR is doing the same thing but every thing on it is new. I'm waiting on another starter relay to get here in the morning. I have got 2 bad safety neutral switches and just about any thing electrical has been replace at least once. I even have new wiring harness with new switch and all. i get all my parts at NAPA but since every thing is now made in China I think that is a lot of the problems. So let us know what you find out and I'll see what happens with mine tomorrow. Ronnie

I didn't want to hear this. It's just strange that one night it's fine and the next morning it's not. Is there a way to get it started in the meantime so I could drive it to a shop?

Have you tried hitting the starter making sure that it is not jammed up? Try that with someone else trying to start the car at the same time.

That hole in the main wire is close to where it hooks up but that main wire has a full 12 volts running thru it that you do not want grounded out anywhere. Im not telling you what to to do Mike but yourself and us here are cheaper then a auto shop. This sounds like it isint any big thing, id check all these things before calling the shop. Check the neutral switch as suggested, to many times ive seen one day it works the next it doesn't, it does happen. I didn't mention the starter being jammed because you tried a remote starter switch and it worked, but it could be that its a hit and miss, you could loosen the starter bolts if the other things don't fix the problem, loosen them just a little and see if it works, if thats the case, a couple shims will solve it. Worth a shot, those garage guys are being paid enough.

Starting

You can jump the starter relay with the switch on and it should start. I have me a push button on 2 wires with clips on it to use, they are easy to build. Just jump the top hot wire with the next one down with the switch on and it should crank. You can just short a screw driver across them if that is all you have. If it starts it's not your safety neurtal switch. Good Luck Ronnie

Just got back from Napa. I bought a new Starter relay and ignition switch. I tested the fusable link and it works fine. First I'm going to install the new relay and then go from there.

If I replace the relay and it still doesn't fire up is there a way to test either the ignition or neutral safety switch?

check the plug on the trans for the neutral safety switch make sure its on good ? also as stated earlier put it in neutral and turn the ignition it should crank .

FIXED IT! $20 starter relay from Napa. Does the starter relay go out often or is this just a fluke? Should I carry an extra one in the glove box?

Relay

i don't know but the one on mine has just been on it about 6 months, maybe drove it 500 miles. I have changed just about every single electrical part on mine since I got it going. Glad you got it fixed. Ronnie

Id be willing to bet mine is the original and the only thing i havent replaced with the starting "stuff". lol.. If you want extra cargo, carrying a extra ballast resister a good idea.

same problem-just my car has been in a garage since 1988-cleaned all grounds-new battery cable ends-new starter relay-new ballast resistor-cleaned all contacts-new fuses-cleaned fuse box-still won't turnover from the key--anyone want a gtx-that how a gremlin like that makes you feel-give the problem to someone else

If its an automatic make sure your contacts are not corroded on neutral safety switch..If you haven't,, sometimes we forget that one cleaning contacts. Ill assume your battery's fully charged and a good one. It may be you need a new ignition switch, something you probably didn't want to hear, but sounds like you have covered about all..
