She was singing & dancing with the Duke Ellington band at the age of 16 or so. The article just says “in the late 40’s”. Folks like her have a drive in their personality. Good trait!
While we were in the midst of the civil rights movement in the mid 60's, for a TV show to portray not only a woman, a "black" woman, in a prominent position of authority, an officer, a Lieutenant in the military on the best ship in the fleet ? ... I myself would consider that to be somewhat historic culturally. And yet, during that time, I had no idea of that significance.
Who knows the significance until many moons later the importance is reviled and how history portrays that event/time.
Robbins Illinois had a historic Airport that opened in the 1930’s, owned by black auto mechanics turned aviators. Great people, great history, great loss.
