I just rebuilt my manual gearbox. I installed a 20:1 gear Mopar PN: P4007612. Now I go to install it and the coupler does not fit. My old gear and coupler have a dead spline, but the new 20:1 gear does not. What goes on here?
Do you have to change the pitman and idler arms when using the 20:1 box on a B-body? I think those 2 things were different on the TA's and AAR's when the 20:1 box came standard.
You have to grind out one spline on your shaft. You have to find the exact center of your steering box. There will be a tight spot in the center, if it is adjusted correctly. Mark the spline at the very top of the shaft, and double check against your coupler to make sure your steering wheel is in the straight ahead position. If it is, grind away.
No aftermarket worm shaft would have a master spline. A lot easier and less come backs for them,if you do it. At least it will be right if you do it yourself.
My Firm Feel 20:1 box came with the master spline ground in. The 20:1 box is my favorite ratio. I took out the power steering in my Belvedere for the 20:1 manual box.
