I plan to convert my 62 Savoy to power steering also. Initially, I thought I would go with a Borgerson set up but Borgerson told me because I have the 318 poly their conversion package doesn’t work. I’m now thinking I may have to try and locate an original pump and steering box have them rebuilt as necessary and go that route. Would love some advice from someone who has already converted their 62 to power steering. Thanks! To be on the safe side I'd say '62-'64.
The steering shaft is shorter for the power steering. The coupler is a different diameter at the steering box so you need one for power steering. Some are using aftermarket steering boxes. Then whatever steering pump you decide to go with you'll need the correct brackets, hoses, pully. Then at least a double pully for the crank shaft. For a big block, 440 Source has the pullys. And brackets for the Saginaw pump.
I recently converted my '62 to power steering from a manual. I really like it.
I don’t think so. The borgerson rep said that the power steering pump won’t fit unless a new bracket is completely fabricated apparently the attaching point to the block or water pump is different on the 62. There were also a couple of comments online that the 318 Poly being a wider engine interferes with the mounting of the Borgerson steering box. However, there were different opinions on that. Not sure why the Borgeson will not work in a '62. I fitted one in my '63 which I thought was pretty much the same. Is the '62 K member different?
Yes, 62 has slant 6 K and a V8 K.Is the '62 K member different?
Not sure on this, but the 318 poly shares the same timing chain water pump housing combo deal, as well as the oil pan, of the later small blocks.apparently the attaching point to the block or water pump is different on the 62. That sounds terrific. What year and and engine do you have?My wife bought me the full Borgeson kit. I’m very happy with the results.
Call Peter at Bergman Autocraft. I just ordered a complete kit for my 74 RR. Literally just paid for it a few minutes ago. He is very helpful and knows these cars. Tell him what you have and he will give you what works for your car. If I bought the kit from Borgeson I would have had to cut the steering column. His kit included the correct pump and pulley, plus the column adapter doesn’t require cutting. Spend the extra and upgrade to the Borgeson steering box. Way better than stock. I was going to go with Firm Feel steering box but after posting here everyone here that had a Firm Feel and now have the Borgeson say the Borgeson is way better. Bergman Auto Craft is also offering free shipping right now. Call Peter, you will be glad you did.I don’t think so. I have it on my '62 with a LA engine.. got it from bergman, worth the expense. That sounds terrific. What year and and engine do you have?
