master cylinder/brake booster

Can anyone tell me what those spacer plates between the master and booster are for. I had two i think on my master cal

I know power drum brake cars got them. I believe they were some kind of a adapter that utilized a filter in them. At least the top part as they had a plastic housing that clipped over the aluminum adapter plate.
