I have never been a numbers matching kind of guy. For the few of those rare cars people do actually find it is always cool to see or read about. The fact is most of these cars were daily drivers, wrecked, raced, blown up & the majority of them are not matching #'s anything, but due to the prices & demand these days with knowledge so many have learned to know about these cars so many are fakes, frauds with stampings, repro fender tags, build sheets, window stickers etc. Some people pay dearly for it, just not me....

Mine was never lost to "find", I just had to open the doors to the container and let it back out! That said, my Bird is not and I could care less.

Wonderful read. I am having a similar issue right now with a buyer for my 1968 Charger base, 318. He wants to know if the engine and transmission are of the same origin. I go on Monday to get the numbers off the block and trans... Gonna end up costing me an hours time at the mechanics.

WHY do you need to spend time at a mechanic.. it's a '68 lift the hood and look for a partial VIN at the top of the casting where the engine attaches to the transmission. Transmission, stick your head, or smart phone, under the car on the passenger side and get a picture of the trans stampings.

I was wondering on a 1969 Dodge Super Bee what the first two digits are before the ID numbers ? there seems to be a space between them? This is on the radiator support.

Just your VIN backwards.. so your VIN is 9GXXXXXX. Body numbers got stamped in reverse to F with your head....

After restoring a numbers matching 71 Superbee and hunting for months to find a few basic pieces with the right dates stamped in them, I bought a basket case 70 Superbee as a follow up project. The engine block and transmission that came with the car did not match so that monkey was off my back right off. It is SO much easier to find a part when you don't care about the numbers, and really for me it is just as much fun. My car will LOOK like it did when new, but the only numbers that match are VIN tag to the fender tag to the body stamps to the broadcast sheet.
