Hi guys,
just installed a new mini-starter that I got off ebay into my 67 belvedere 440 auto. When I turn the key, it just spins without engaging. No grinding or clicking, just a big whiiiizzzzz. Any ideas what I could try?

I know that this will sound stupid but check the wiring again. If its right then try using a screw driver across the poles on your starter relay to see if the bendix picks up.

That's what I was thinking- "Bendix".

had to replace one on my first 66 coronet the week after I bought it.
Had never done it or even knew it was a possible repair.
Was interesting getting it back together.

it is possible to wire it to cause that, but you have to almost make an extra effort to do it.if the starter just spins it means that the bendix is not enguaging.you can check it by removing it from the car,and useing a fully charged battery.hook the ground(negative)to the body of the starter(where it bolts up)and touch the positive side to the small terminal.that will engage the bendix without turning the starter motor so you can test it seperately.it should couse the drive gear to pop out.if not then either it is bad electronically or mechanically broken inside.you could also take it to any autoparts store and they should be able to test it for draw on the motor as well.

So apparently, the plastic wiring block was contacting the engine block and not letting the starter seat properly, I took it off and it works well now, thanks for all the input guys.
