More Taxes On The Way for Internet Sales

I see this tax thing as a somewhat good thing so instead of everyone buying off line to save a few bucks they shop locally now and help support the local economy ! Why should I buy crap on line and let people in CA get rich when I can get it here and keep people in my area having a job !
The $38.00 part that can be bought for $11.00 with discount that the locals want $65.00 for. It creates a job some where. A few locals will honor any internet price for the same item. Very few.

And most local parts houses near me don't have what I want in stock and have to order it anyway. Two or three days plus they charge you for the shipping. Summit gets it to me in 24 hrs. free shipping over $100. Locals can't compete with that.

All true! KK when you heading west? Free guided tour waiting for you at Summit! No drooling allowed! Jeff

I might go as far as Ohio but no further!

My observation is there are a lot of car guys in Ohio. Seems like a lot on here are from there too.

Lol, Summit is on eastern side! Got a spare bedroom just waiting. ‘Moparnation74 ‘ is only 2 hrs. south!

Item at Home Depot - not stocked - 4 to 7 day delivery to the store $34.. Same Item at Amazon $23., free 2 - 4 day delivery TO MY DOOR !!

Welcome to my world. We get raped overseas with all purchases - paying duty based on the amount of USD at the day of calculation (even if if the exchange rate was more favourable at the time of purchase) - then we get taxed on the total amount including freight and any other sundry charges. then we get taxed on the entire amount plus local tax on the entire transaction.

You guys have it easy. That SureGrip unit I just bought ended up costing a lot....but I did save on not having to get it rebuilt on top....and I got inside one week. At least RockAuto have sweet freight charges...just that our Govt helps themselves when it arrives here.

Well, just did a Rock Auto order and now for the first time they’re charging me tax. Ughhh!?!

Are you sure shipping charges are not taxable ?? Shipping is labor and labor is taxable. In Canada, if we purchase goods from the US and they get taxed, they are taxed at the cost including shipping.
Not true. We do not get taxed on shipping when importing into Canada. When I import, the shipping cost is removed from the taxable amount.
That said, tax collection at the border is inconsistent and at the discretion of the border agent.

I depends on how its shipped. If its shipped by mail there is no tax on shipping. If it comes in any other way then you are taxed on the full invoice value - which usually includes shipping. But either way, so what - it is what it is and you can't fight it.

Sadly, we don't have stores like Jegs, Summit Racing, etc. Also, none of the aftermarket stores are here, with the exception of the Classic Chevy and Ford parts store. But they don't price match internet stores.

So, some purchases have to be online at out of state retailers.

We had tons of speed shops ! Around here until the internet killed them off!

I seriously doubt it was the internet that killed them or even had anything to do with it. The fact is there are just too many products for too many brands for any "local speedshop" to be able to stock and maintain an inventory. Just take a walk around Summit's store and it quickly becomes apparent that if they were to only rely on local business they would have died a horrible death long ago. And what good is a "local" business if they can't provide the same or better service than someone like Summit - who either stocks and ships from a well-stocked central warehouse or direct from the manufacturer. In the "good ol' days when there were only Cragars, Keystones or Ansen wheels to choose from a small shop could carry some inventory with no worries about turnover. Nowadays whats popular today is passe tomorrow and collects dust on the shelf. So no, it wasn't the internet that killed the little guy - it was the demand for a broader range of products that made local stocking unfeasible.

^^^+1. I was lucky enuf to be close to Summit’s incarnation. The CEO is always thinking 10-15 yrs ahead. Obviously,he nailed it. Expanding warehouse space, more regional stores, etc. he did it right. Started with a what 10,000 sq.ft. in an industrial park?

Here's the problem with all this "tax online sales to boost local business" nonsense....
folks like me don't buy online what I can get locally now.
Further, no internet tax is going to force the local opening of businesses that sell what I fetch online, either.

This sort of notion is textbook socialism - and it has some real problems in practical application.
Always does.

Too,late for us in PA. They started the internet sales tax thing back on April 1. I thought it was a joke but it wasn't. Most still don't charge but you get a big message that says your state requires them to report purchases. Now I have to screw with on state income taxes. Sucks.

Talked to my tax guy today and he said when completing your taxes there is a line that asks you if you bought off the internet. You reply with "yes". Then the next line asks if you spent more than $1,000. Anything under this amount doesn't have to be reported or paid on.

That only applies to your state.

Each state has it's own rules.
