Moving to Texas

This example isn’t tax related, but it’s a really good example of what I’m trying to say. A couple years ago Trump Jr came to Weatherford Tx, the town I live in, to promote his book. There was a young lady holding an iPhone, with a Starbucks drink in her hands, live streaming on Facebook shouting “stop supporting billionaires.” That’s what I mean by people being brainwashed

I was going to try to explain what I meant without getting political, but screw it, it can’t be done. As we all know socialists are calling themselves democrats because it sounds better. Their favorite phrase to get uneducated people (not calling them stupid, you can’t be stupid if you haven’t been educated) to their side is “tax the rich” or “punish the rich for being rich” because it sounds so good, like “free healthcare” and “free college” oooh that sounds good! But what people don’t understand is not only are these socialists making just as much as these billionaires, and also doing a lot of shady things, sometimes more then some other billionaires, they’re not going let people know, you can actually discuss with the city or the irs how much you want to pay in taxes at a certain time, or the fact that the more you make the more you’re taxed.

I'm not beating on you and would never think of doing that. You I like, you're young and hold the future of our country in your hands. I trust you will always do the right thing.

So we’ve been here for 3 weeks and we love Texas! Get a call at O Dark Thirty from my daughter’s school saying it’s cancelled due to the storm. I get up at 7, see the message look outside, I’m stunned cause it looked the same this morning as it did yesterday, cold. Ok, do I tell my little one, she’s happy. I run some errands and get home. A few minutes later, it’s snowing or sleet or hail or whatever the hell it’s called. Then we lose power for 1 and 20 minutes. Gotta love Texas weather.

I've been in my area since 63 and well, hurricanes are somewhat common along the Gulf Coast and every now and then a little tornado comes through but the one we had last Tuesday was big (EF3) compared to what we usually get.....and an EF3 isn't exactly a wimpy one. I was probably a mile and a half from it but got straight line wind/rain and I guestimate 70mph wind. So far I haven't found any damage but haven't looked all that close yet. At least the roof doesn't seem to be leaking anywhere. They say we got 100 mph wind from Hurricane Ike and we got a 45 minute eye here but the only thing it did was mess up the yard with a whole bunch of leaves and 'trimmings' from the trees and blow off the rain gutters. This tornado messed up things that Ike didn't do but at least it was gone in a few minutes instead of sticking around for hours. Yup, welcome to Texas lol

Does anybody think the Commiefornia will go after people who don’t live in the State, for taxes? I foresee this **** show headed to the SC and being struck down as UNCONSTITUTIONAL! You can’t be liable for taxes in another State if you aren’t employed by a company in said State.

Likely going to be a collection issue if the taxpayer has no presence or standing in the state. If you earn money there, probably fair game.

Luckily I don't have a billion dollars, so not going to get hit with a tax.

An acre doesn’t mean ya have a farm, I’ve got an acre now and a VA loan. Something isn’t right with that. Azle would be good too, but we are trying to stay out of any city to avoid “city taxes”.
get a better lender, VA only precludes farms where there are crops obviously in view. but the Home has to be at least 70% value of the whole property. One acre is not a question. 10-20 would be.
If a lender says such a thing, it is the mortgage company saying it, not VA,FHA,or Conventional guarantors.

Yup....and borrowers of VA backed loans need to keep in mind that if they sell and let someone 'assume' the original loan, that loan is still on the back of the originator. I learned about that back in the 70's and found out several years after I assumed a VA load on my first house when someone told me and then checked it out to found it was true. I also know someone that found out the hard way in the late 80's when he let a VA loan go into the hands of his X wife who later quit paying on it. It bit him in the arse many years later when he tried to buy another place. That cost him a pretty penny before he could be approved for his new loan :D

Yep they jump the gun when they are gonna get ice down there. But for very good reason. 99% of Texans have no clue about driving on slick roads. I got stuck in a truck stop on the south side during an ice storm in the early 2000s. It was horrendous watching the idiots on 20 crashing, and they just wouldn't stop.

Lots more got schooled about this time 2 years ago all through the state of Texas. I grew up in the NE but was too young to drive before leaving but spent 2 years of winter in Germany. Think I did ok (no crashes or spinning out into anything) but learned a good deal about car control in my teens starting out on large wet parking lots then going to the beach (I live pretty close to the Gulf Coast) and later going to hard pavement. Hard sandy beaches was much like wet parking lots but dry pavement was much different. Btw, doing slow motion donuts on ice is eye opening with the nearly 0 traction lol. It did amaze me at how so many people were out driving the regular speed limits when the roads were so hazardous and they do that each and every time it gets bad. Hell, most don't even slow down any when the roads are wet. They seem to speed up in it!

Ya got two types of idiots when the roads are snowy or icy.... Speed demons & terrified... Can't they all learn to follow my skillful lead....

I lived in Houston from 1986-1988 working for Enron. That winter several Ice storms hit the city, and the place shut down!.I lived in spring, and made it to work every day.
My dept manager who was retired Army was asked by corporate why Tim can get to work, and nobody else?
Terry said dryly: he's A YANKEE. He knows how to drive on the ice.
True story!!
I got a lot of OT because of that Ice.

I obviously am not trained in weather patterns but I always thought that being further south meant warmer weather. Arizona is hotter than Montana. How can states like Texas and Alabama get so damn cold in the winter?
Last year, Lawton OK was below zero for several days.
I always heard that birds fly south for the winter. What if the south isn’t any warmer than the north ??

Had a nasty ice storm in 2005 appox before leaves fell from trees. Had an 80ft oak that had 4 large branches about 50ft up, no lower branches below. The ice built up on leaves at 2 am 2 large branches split the top and fell. Of course they were the ones facing the house. They broke two glass panels (2.5'X 4.5' ea) on top of sunroom and the sliding glass door. In the morning went out for a look see. A 1 ft dia X 70' tall oak top was bent so leaf part was 20ft off the ground, didn't snap. Did $5k damage or so. Insurance company cancelled home policy at end of term. Friday night says =3 and a high of 12 degrees Sat and night 11 degrees. First really cold night/day.

That is an excellent question. And my best answer for you is because Texas.

Ice

In "winter" here, different every year sometimes Sept. Oct. Nov.
but usually, early Dec. to end of Feb. (some years into Apr.)
we pretty much have Ice or snow 20-40 to *60 (*like this year already)
or so times a season
depending on what years or if there's a la Ninia or el Nino,
it's still there in most "winter" mornings & evenings...

the rest 300+ days of sunshine, clear skies, classic car cruising weather
(or wheeling, fishing & hunting)

Especially Black Ice on shady areas of the road, that rarely get any sun
Whether it rained, snowed or whatever, from runoff, if nothing else
just something you learn to live with...

With lots of flatlanders in the ditches... :poke:

The north side of our house (my backyard, back decks) is 10* cooler
all winter too

Because it usually doesn't stay long. It can get real cold down here but in 2-3 days it's back up in the50-60 degree range. New years day it was 72 in Tulsa.
