My new stock stroke 400 build

Since we're over 2 years on this thread now the title seems misleading at this point.
Perhaps it should read - "My good old stock stroke 400 build"
Or perhaps not...

The engine build was finished a year and a half ago, but it has only been running in the car for about 6 months. Does that still qualify as new???

Okay, I have been thinking again, a dangerous thing. The Edelbrock E-Street heads are on sale right now for 10% off, which brings them down to $2K Cdn for the pair. I always wondered if any of my overheating problems could be traced back to a crack in my home ported 346 heads. The advantages would be of course more flow, lighter weight, and with the 75 cc chambers as opposed to my current 89 cc chambers, it would bump the compression from 8.5:1 up to 9.5:1.

I need someone to talk me down from the ledge.

Merry Christmas Dave

Are you on Santa's "Good Boy" list? Sounds like a great retirement project. Merry Christmas, Dave.

Not sure I have ever been on Santa's good list, which my wife would probably confirm.

Gaskets and bolts could be the tipping point.

You'll likely spill some coolant.
Then question putting the stock log type manifolds back on so consider upgrading to HP style or even dreaded headers so a new exhaust system probably.

Now the cam comes into question? Maybe a bit more aggressive.
Twin superchargers might be nice? A blow through carb perhaps.

The rest of the drivetrain probably won't hold up so a new driveshaft and axle.
Now you need bigger tires so new wheels and a spring relocation kit.
Next your tubbing the thing... a roll cage... it's a sickness I tell you.

But hey you did save 10% after all.

Well, aluminum DOES dissipate hear much better...

Did I help? :poke:

I am aware of the sickness Don, I was infected in my teens and had a series of Barracudas that showed the progression of the disease.

Hawk, you may recall that the stroker was originally dynoed using home ported 452 heads, and later switched to Performer RPM's. There may be a trend here?

I did check a few that I could access easily, and they were right on, so I didn't disassemble any further.

So much for talking me off the ledge. The heads are ordered.

I imagine all the A/C bs kinda knocks the fun out of it

It should all fit with the new heads. I won't have to worry about people noticing the heads since you can't even see them!

I talked to my machine shop guy yesterday and he thinks the head swap is a win/win. Higher compression and better flow, even with the small cam.

Another plus, I needed to fix a leaky valve cover gasket anyway!
