Been thinking about my plan of attack with the Polara. Want list and needs. I need to get the wipers working for sure this year. The heater sprung a leak last year which may be the core or just the heater valve (from what I have heard). It is bypassed for now but it should be fixed sometime. The wipers may require that I remove the motor and/or linkage and from what I have read, it is much easier to get to with the heater removed. I will think about that combination of repairs and then proceed. The worst part of working under the dash is the seats and console are in the way. Pull the seats and replace the upholstery, work on the wipers and the heater all at once? Decisions, decisions!

I always pull the front seat, especially as I approach six decades on the planet.

Friend of mine with a 65 Coronet has had issues with heater valve leaks, there's a slip-fit o-ring that sounds like a trouble spot. (?)

The valve is kind of odd, it has a plunger that moves in and out, has 2 rubber seals that after 60 years give up :( it's possible to rebuild it yourself. but i am sending mind to a guy that charges $100 and supposedly comes back like new..

This gives a bit of an overview

I am hoping. No leak until I blew some air into the squirrel cage to clean it out. And then as soon as I started the engine it just poured out. I upset something there.

Thanks. I might have to pull things apart and see what's going on. It is a strange set up.

Detroit muscle sells the seals for like $13... the issue i have is you have to bend brass tabs back that hold it all together and i just see them breaking.. will let the valve guy do it. :)

There is a o-ring that seals it to the core.. seems people had a hard time finding the proper one for that

You can work on the wiper motor through the glove box opening. Pull your glove box liner out and remove passenger bucket seat(4 nuts). Way easier than pulling the heater. If you are pulling the heater for repairs anyways, bonus.

Thanks Dave. The glove box liner is out. It fell apart when I went to take it out. LOL 60 year old cardboard you know. I haven't diagnosed the problem but it's #1 on my list. Some penetrating oil and some electrical checks to start. I have found some NOS switches if needed.

The heater valve can be removed on a 64 without taking the heater box out. you have to work around the brake arm and above the accelerator linkage but it can be done.

I bought a reproduction glove box liner for my '64 Polara, and it was made of fibreglass, instead of wimpy cardboard. I don't remember where I got it. Because I installed aftermarket A/C, and its associated plumbing, I was not able to install the liner as one piece. I had to cut it lengthwise, to get it in as two pieces. I then joined the two halves together with pieces of that pierced metal strapping used to hang HVAC piping. Not the prettiest, but it works. I painted the reinforcements satin black, and they get lost in the blackness of the glove box.

Beautiful weather today making me want to get to work on the 64. I have to get some outside work done before I can play. Wipers, turn signal switch, and heater core are on my list. I bought a new switch form Dan so that's just an install. Not too bad of a job. The wipers are all under the dash and I hear they are easier to get to with the heater out. It's already bypassed so taking the unit out would be a great help.
