I've got a 1970 GTX. We picked it up from a guy in 2012, He was living in basically a rundown shack... He had forgotten when he bought the car Exactly but knows at least 35 years... From the Get-go: my thoughts: i can't fix this car... The rust, Even the car smelled of it... Back in late 2016 i decided i would fix it. Not before going back and remembering Why i had made the decision i had. And to top that off: finding more rust in the process... Back in May: i cleared the carpeting inside and in the trunk... Heres what i found:

Both quarters are rusted away from the car, Even the hood has started rusting away from the inside out. From what pictures i could share: we have an idea what that other rust looks like... The kicker: the 440 was pulled and replaced with a 318... ... Original Specs: Born in Los Angeles. In the Special price range. U-Code ( 1 4Barrel carburetor ) 440 High Performance, Original Citron Gold car, 727 possible 904 trans. Black buckets and healiner on top of gold carpeting, Full black vinyl roof, cruise control, rallye clock etc. These are the options i can count for myself... The Fender Tag and BroadCast sheet are both destroyed. Vin: RS23UOE. Production unit number: 149417. I was Thankfully able to look up apon FBBO through a Friend, Thanks for the advice!

Welcome!

What advice or thoughts are you looking for? I didn't see a question.

You have quite the project there.

It may very well be to far gone. It's not worth restoring but could be restored. I'd sell it to someone that may be looking to get into a GTX project for a low price.

904 transmissions were used in smallblock applications.

Hahaha, Thank You! Well: just what comes to mind when The Mopar Community sees this car... The shape that its in, just whatever is thought at that exact moment after reading and viewing the pictures. You think i should move forward in fixing this car? I fitted all the pics i could but i also have a 71 Satellite Sebring and a 70 Charger... Both thankfully not in this bad of shape but bad enough themselves...

Sometimes they need to be knocked in the head and parted out.

Got it! I guess my first reaction was my rust allergies going crazy.

That car would have to be something really special to be brought back to life. Pretty far gone.

Disassemble and take to the media blaster. Then you'll see exactly what you have. If you not interested in at that point you'll have it all apart to start selling parts.

Hahaha, Thanks for the advice! I haven't got the money to restore them... But with a little time, ingenuity and Very Hard Work
Im going to damn well try and get them back on the road again... Oh and Thanks about the advice on the 904. I've only known about it a few months and figured it for RB engines too. Hahaha, Thanks again!

Hahaha! Yep, those were my first thoughts. But that day that i made my mind up to fix it, i said: No matter How Much rust, How Bad: im going to stick by it and fix this car. I've got to try, Hahaha Thanks for the words Friend!

Its a judgement call. There is a lot of metal made now to save these. Wasn't saying you shouldn't do it. I stripped a RR down recently that was about like this except it still had the matching #s motor. Tough call...

Thanks, Yep: this is basically a base GTX. The lowest of the High scale Top of the Line car, Hahaha! I've got to live with: it wont be original again by the standards im fixing it by... So I've got this 400 RB that im going to stick in there until i can find another 440 of any year. That engine has been sitting in a hole on the ground for almost 30 years itself... Either way i look at it: im in a Deep Hole and no where near to digging out so to speak... My 71 hasn't ran in over 35 years... Its got the original 383 which thankfully had oil in it All these years... So far: they're sitting in barns amongst junk: sad to see. Im never going to quit on them, thats for sure... One day: ill have them All out and running!

Oh, I knew what you ment Friend! Hahaha, when i get to taking the parts off its going to look like its going to the scrapyard... I know mopars go for So Much. Bondo is All over my 70 Charger, I've seen worse sell for 7-8 thousand. Craigslist had a 70 500: completely ransacked: looked like a Rust Twister came through it and he wanted close to $3,000 for it... Hopefully i can start doing something next year... My dad has an All Original 71 Charger. It was the base model, i could name the few options it came with from the top of my head: 318, white walls and hubcaps: Landau Roof marketed "At no Extra Charge" By Dodge. Its the: Topper model. My dad had to put the RH mirrior on it. He didn't have a set of mag 500s so he used torino wheels and put some flowmasters to it. Sounds pretty mean for a 318. Hahaha!

Hahaha, Sure thing. Im greener than an apple... Still learning how to do things, This is Exciting i must say! I've knew about this forum for a long while but thought you had to pay to sign up etc. Hahaha, Cool! I hope you can get er running Very Soon Friend! Yep, I remember Mopars were dipped in a anti-rust dip and it would last 40 years. But after that... I really dont know if it infact worked like it was suppose to... But when these poor mopars rust: they really do it to it... Good Luck Friend!

All I can say is this.....treat it as the hobby it is and restore the car and don't give a crap what it is worth when done. Too many a-holes around who start with "don't do it, you won't get your money back". Who the fu** cares,it is a HOBBY. If golf is your hobby do you get the money back that you spend on it? No. If you want to make a ton of money (like a business) than you are in the wrong HOBBY!

Amen to that Friend! Theres Always that One Guy who says that or values the car by How much its worth. Ive had a guy tell me: fix the gtx. I asked why. He said: because its worth the most. The disbelief i had towards this dumb... Local Yokel... What an idiot. Hahaha, ill shut him up once he sees how im getting thesr cars fixed. Hahahaha, Your comment brought a smile to my face, Thumbs Up!

Unless you are handy with a welding rig, and good at panel work....you're going to make a Body Guy very happy, and cost yourself a fortune at AMD (like the Mad Scientist said above). I love the 70 GTX body, and I hate to see one go to scrap, but there is a serious amount of work needed here.
Good luck which ever way you decide to go.

Rust.....meh. That's what AMD and Miller are for! Good luck, it's a GTX, it would have to be pretty bad underneath not to justify resurrecting it. Once you get it all apart and see the bones you can make a real choice.

Until then

The car is not terrible! Amd will save it I'd keep it on back burner and do up witch ever car excite s you the most . Worst case sell it to fund another or sell the others to fund it! I've started with less many times . But if you have to call it dead we won't say nothing not all cars can be saved and org parts are always needed .good luck and lest see pictures of the other projects
