Need Help- what's this 63 Dodge 440 worth ? ? My Uncle is interested - like feedback

And what do you think the seller is doing? :) If he's got the car for sale, he wants someone to buy it.

As for the my way or highway approach to buying and selling, it doesn't work if your goal is to actually buy or sell something. I've known plenty of guys who have missed out on deals because they were sure the other guy was going to break before they did, and when they didn't they let things get personal. Always a mistake. I saw that a lot at Ford. Some dude would come in and sit with a salesman for an hour and no deal would be made. The guy would talk to a different salesman and they're writing up a contract in no time and for a higher price that the first guy was selling at! And the best salesmen at Ford do exactly what Harrison does... empathy, empathy, and more empathy.

You go in there and start calling him on restos vs restorizing, and building clones, and how he's off his rocker if he thinks he's gonna get $25k, you're not likely to get the deal you want and worse, you'll pay more for whatever deal you end up making. Always better to...

1. State how much you like the car, admire the work that's been done, etc.
2. State how you can see why he would want his asking price for it
3. Start hitting him with all the issues
4. End it by talking about comparative prices
5. Take your car home :)

Thanks a BUNCH Bruzilla . . . the information that you provided ( that everyone provided ) is top-notch, and we'll be able to use it ( hopefully to our advantage ) when we actually do get into negotiations with the seller. My Uncle has some personal stuff that he needs to take care of this week first. But, he's also told me that if he can't get the car for a good price - and his thought of a good price is right in the ballpark that you have stated - then he'll just keep his 64 Dart that he's been working on.

So if the guy is "fixed" on his selling price - my Uncle is more than willing to walk away.

On the flip side - he does really like the car ! ! ( smile )

Time will tell . . .

Always start any negotiation with the words "LISTEN HERE!!"

Awwww . . . do I do that while grabbing his shirt and lifting him in the air ? ? ( smile )

Thanks everyone for the information . . .

I wanted to take a minute and thank everyone that provided information regarding the car that my Uncle was interested in purchasing.

After the B/J auction, he parked his car over by the pavilion - guess it's a common thing to do after the auction - there were 1200 cars there.

Word is that he sold the car for $25K . . . so we never got a chance to get into negotiations with the seller.

Thanks again for your help - it just wasn't meant to be . . . ( smile )

Oh, and Goon - we never got a chance to try "LISTEN HERE" either ! ! ( smirk )

$25k is good money, looked like a nice car... thanks for the update so many people don't update these type threads or won't say what a car sold for or what they ultimately paid !!

Glad to update Budnicks - You guys took your time to send me a post with information, I thought it was only fair to fill you back in with the final details.
( and I've noticed too that people don't fill in the final details )

I thought it was only "proper" - thanks for the information again ( we'll use it on the next car if we find one ).

Ahhhh, this was at BJ? I thought this was a local deal. All bets are off at a major auction like that. Buying cars like that are like picking up women after last call. :) By then the best gals are gone and guys who struck out with the good ones are desperate to just go home with something. Same deal with these auctions. Guys who showed up with cash in hand to buy specific cars and got outbid are often wanting to go home with something and will pay more than what they normally would just to get something, which is why owners will park their cars that way.

In a day where a really nice paint job can easily top 15K cars that go for 20K-25K can be a bargain. Until you see the car you don't know. Many of theses 15K cars have no new suspension, trans, or engine rebuilds, new wiring, new chrome, polished trim, ETC. All this stuff adds up quick. Not that you can't buy a nice 15k car, but. I've never seen this car in person. But what do I see. Replated door latches, repop steering wheel, nice plastic chrome on the dash. These are details not always seen in lower priced cars. How nice a car do you want. I gaurantee you'd be hard pressed to duplicate this car from a decent original with minimal rust for 25K. With rust forget it. Even if you did all the work yourself it would be tough.

I agree with dvw! It's hard to do even a decent driver resto. for under the 20 grand figure! And also your time is worth some thing!
