So, edelbrock says the 5090 heads will work with stock manifolds. Not to sure about that. Stock 69 hp manifolds. Passenger side 6 and 8 is the issue.

Went to run in the motor, 383 based, and it worked flawlessly for about the first 19 minutes, then started a periodic miss, which got worse. Shut er down. Next day went to diagnose things and the the #6 and #8 msd 90 degree spark plugs boots were near disintegrated from the heat of the manifold. Need to know if any others have had this issue and what you’ve done to combat the problem, straight boots that can be bent slightly? a different brand? I don’t know and only want to do this one more time. Any help is appreciated!!!

Issue is the angle plug on the heads point the plug too close to the manifold, I think anyway.

Please help

Are you able to install the one piece heat shields for #6 & #8 plugs that mount to the head bolts?

From the looks of it, no. The edelbrock heads are angle plug, which would prohibit this. Thanks though!

I’m wondering if the msd straight boot that are bendable by 15 or 20 degrees might be best. Anyone?

I agree ceramic boots.... Back in the day Rajah clips were the best option but ceramic boots are better.

So it looks like ceramic is the way to go. I’m not familiar with them, are they flexible or solid/not flexible like I imagine they are? And if they are solid can you crimp/make your own ends like msd etc... or is there a special technique/tools required. I just need to visualize how I can work with it... thanks so much.

Summit sells a house brand ceramic wire set, black or white boots, 90° or straight. Jegs sells an accel ceramic set. In each case the plug ends are part of the wire set, not available to put on your wires. The length is adjusted at the distributor end. Neither set is inexpensive .
Oh, and the plug boots are very solid. Ceramic. Very hard. Also, summit says theirs do not work with shorty plugs. I suspect the accel would be the same.
Accel blurb says these are the solution if you are melting boots, good to
2000° f.

They are rigid... The Pertronix ones are a little different, since it's just boots & not assembled wires they need to be made in a way that you can install them, so they are a little. oversize & have rubber inserts to seal the boot to the wire....

I run the DEI Titanium Boot Protectors on #6 and #8 for the last two summers

Other then looks , they work great

I run those same heads on my 71 Bee with HP Manifolds

But with that said

I have sitting in my
garage today they showed up , those very same Pertronix 90 Degree Black Ceramic Boots a pair

I have not installed them yet , but was reading about them last week when I purchased new spark plug wires from Pertronix

I run there coil also

I am very happy with the performance and way less ohm resistance of the Pertronix Big Block Mopar Spiral Core Spark Plug Wires

They fit great using all the factory wire retainers and have no
logos or stampings

Anyways those same DEI Titanium Spark Plug Boot Protectors went back on #6 and #8 wires for now

How thick are the 90 degree pertronix boots IE: how close will they get to the manifold? Could you try on on and take a pic? Would be much appreciated!

I can take pictures of the ceramic boots tomorrow boss

There still in a box LOL

I will measure thickness

Anyways won’t get back under the car until next week

It’s supposed to snow tomorrow
Unreal

Working straight thru the weekend

2” Long

About 3/4” wide on the wide end
5/8” on everything else , 90 degree bend next to exhaust

I see no reason why these wouldn’t work perfect other then the rubber adapters are designed for 8mm wires

My Pertronix wires are 7mm

So with that said plenty of options

My DEI Titanium Boot Protectors are working fine also

Lots of good information coming out here.

For anyone using DEI thermal sleeves, I notice they have different ones, ie: silver, titanium, protects boot, XL etc, what’s the real world differences between these, which ones did/do you use and do you think they can the bend/wrap over a 90 spark plug degree boot?

They work, they will discolor with direct contact but beats a burnt plug wire. They easily fit over a 90deg boot
