I have a 63 Plymouth Belvedere with a push button trans. Yesterday I pushed the neutral button in and it went past its stopping point and " fell in " . Can anyone tell me how to fix this? How do I get to it ? Is it much of a problem to correct? I need your help. Any and all info is greatly appreciated . Thanks, John

There are a couple of screws that hold cover over buttons. Remove screws, slowly pull cover off of buttons, be sure to hold buttons in place while pulling cover off. You can then retrieve n button and reinstall it in fork that it goes in. Then replace cover and install screws.

Like Badlite says, easy enough to pull the cover off the front and see what the problem is. The thing is that these plastic buttons are 50+ years old and are prone to break and split if you are not careful with them. It could be that the button itself is broken and may need replacement. I see them for sale on Ebay occasionally but they are getting kinda rare. If I remember correctly the buttons on a 63 and 64 are the same but the shifter mechanism is different because the buttons slant up to the left a little.

You'll might want to disconnect the speedo cable to allow a little more movement of the dash cluster as well. I'm with Moparsmitty on this guess. You might have a cracked or broken neutral button being that the entire shifter assembly is securely mounted to the dash. Buttons on the '63 are more akin to the '62's for the angle they are set at.

Thank You Everyone. The button was broken. I had to improvise a fix. Hopefully it'll last a long time and until I find a replacement. Here is the car I needed the fix for. DSCF2084 - cropped - Copy.jpg

Now that is cool!!:headbang:

I know nothing about the n button but I have seen your car on here for a while and think it is cooler than S#*t.

That is one hot pursuit vehicle. Glad you were able to fix the button.

This might help. The same thing happened on my 63 Dodge Drive button. When I repaired it I JB Welded a small strip of aluminum to the inside plate at the lower edge where the button rides so that it could not push in behind the button front plate. Naturally I glued it to the inside of the plate where it does not show.
