hey im looking to buy a new alternator from summitracing for my 1971 barracuda with a 340 and 4 speed transmission,it has the stock orange ecu and the black voltage regulator, looking for a slightly higher amp alternator, any advice would be really appreciated

Any good automotive electrical shop should be able to take care of that for you.

Hi amps means low charge at idle!
You want to see 12-13 turns in each coil segment of the stator windings for higher voltage output at lower rpms. The "high-current" alternators with only 6-7 turns per winding do put out the advertised amps going down the road, and they are a lot easier and cheaper to wind, but they result in dim lights at idle, and if you are running headlights, fan, etc, there's not enough voltage to make the turn signal flash.
It's an old story. I had a motor shop custom rewind a stator with smaller wire, putting 12 turns in each pole, and never had the problem anymore.
I used to scour junkyards looking for alternators with the original factory smaller gauge wire with more turns and then use them until the insulation began failing, then swap in another factory wound stator. Smaller pulley will help, too. Rotors also have different amounts of wire, also affecting the charge rate vs speed. I love 35 amp alternators.

i live in qatar and the electrical shops here i dont trust......and its a stock setup...car is just as it came from the factory,if anyone could suggest any alternator from summitracing any brand which would work with my current setup would really appreciate it

This problem began for me in the late 70s when I could find NO rebuilt aternators that would charge properly at idle with the car in drive and foot on the brake.
Then I went to electronics engineering school, and it all became clear.
It's all about making the rewind cheap and easy. The old stators were hand wound, and each coil was compacted and shaped to fit. Even now, I can't seem to find anyplace offering a stator that has enough turns per coil to output decent voltage at low rpm. People who make widmill charging systems rewind auto alternator stators with up to 80 feet of wire in each of the 3 legs of the windings,
so they have good output at very low speed.

Does the air still smell like **** still? Really nasty stuff when the wind blows right. If your Military, get your butt on the VA site and register on the "Burn Pit Registry".

In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, they use sewer water to irrigate the planters in street dividers. Boy, is THAT fragrant about 2 in the afternoon!

no the air dosent smell bad at all, just gets a lil dusty at time and everythings pretty high end and life is easy down here and you get paid bloody good

Sorry but I do not see an alternator at Summit I would use. I would not go over 60 amps, and I would keep in mind the chysler amp meter melt down problems. You can get lower price, quality stuff from, Napa, Carquest, Delco and the likes. May not be available there??

price is not an issue as far as im concerned just need a an high amp alternator to work with my car .can i add a wire direct from the alternator to the battery to solve the Chrysler amp melt down problems?and yea none of them shops down here ,could you post a link to the one you suggest ?i could get it shipped to my friends down there and have him ship it to qatar
