New here

I having a hell of a time with trying to get fire. The day I got it running, I stopped what I was doing and went into the house. I shut the hood and that was it. Next day it rained and poured here, didn't touch the car. Went out there yesterday and had no fire at all. Only thing I did different was take a blow gun to the motor to blow all the dust and dirt off. Now not getting any fire and its stumping me.

Welcome. Looks like a great project, and you'll discover its not any more difficult to troubleshoot than what you already know about.

Reading your post today reminded me of all the times I spent under the hood of my 73 chasing an intermittent "no fire" with only a Motor manual (Blue Book) and a cheap multi-meter. What have you tried so far?

thinking its the distributor. Got power to the coil and still no fire. I ordered a new one so we will see. Cleaned all the points and mag but still no luck with this one. Going to have to wait for my new one to come in is my guess?

Welcome, you stole that car. Quarters alone are worth $750 each if in good condition. I could go on about all the parts you could sell off, so you are not going to lose any money. I know you want to get it running again but please be careful about Shotgunning it. If you do that, you may get it running but not actually know what exactly fixed it. Trouble shoot with a plan and go part by part until it fires back up. Good Luck and great buy.

Mostly all my friends think I should get it running and flip it for a profit, but I like this car a lot. It spoke to me sitting in the field, as I was buying two camaros from the guy for dirt tracking. I sold my 84 Monte Carlo SS to buy this car, I plan on keeping it and cruising it. My cousin has a 440 id like to put in it someday.

Well fellas I got my distributor in today. I yanked out the old one and the inside of this motor is really nasty. The old distributor had sludge and looked like fur all on the shaft. Remember this car sat in a field for at least 13 years with no air cleaner or valve covers. I put the new one in. Cranked it over and it fire up. The radiator is in it, but un bolted and missing the top radiator hose so the motor shouldn't have had any water in it.

I replaced the carb because it was leaking gas underneath it. Previous owner rigged a 4 barrel eldebrock on with having the stock 2 barrel intake using the adapter plate. The gasket he used baffled me and explained why it was leaking but the carb is in need of a rebuild anyways so I threw a 1850 holley 600 I had with the correct gaskets to get it running.

Got it running where it would somewhat idle and before I did all this the oil was full and somewhat clean. I was revving it up to blow the cob webs out the exhaust for a good 10 secs and it shut off almost as if it locked up. With having no water hooked up I was betting I ruined this motor and was cussing myself because I knew better. I cranked it over and it clicked, assuming it locked up. But I waited a few more mins and it cranked over again so I was relieved. I checked the oil and it was milky. Im guessing water got into motor over the years and starting it got the oil pumping with the water and it got so full it couldn't run. I drained the pan and holy moly, nothing but milky sludge came out and I ruined the drain plug trying to get it off.

I left it draining over night and for a sec I started it to see if it would run and it did. Ill change the oil and put a new radiator hose on and let it idle and change the oil a few more times with some cleaner to wash this thing out. Any tips on what I should do? This motor is really dirty inside and I want to avoid pulling it out.

Welcome from Washington State. Make sure to use some Marvel Mystery Oil in your first oil flush and run some through the fuel to clean up the valves.

Thank you for the advice, I will have to do that for sure. I got a new drain plug, changed the oil and filter and got it to start and idle on its on today! dipstick and leaking valve covers show the oil became milky again. I'm betting im going to have to change the oil a few more times to get it all out. I'm really hoping it doesn't have blown headgaskets. I still haven't hooked up water to it yet, but I did order a new radiator hose and valve cover gaskets and they will be her tomorrow. I will finish it all up tomorrow and see if she has any problems once I put water into it. I did buy two oil changes and a bottle of motor flush for the next oil change.

Can someone show my a pic of their throttle mechanism? I'm not sure how it all hooks up, along with the throttle cable. Seems like my throttle isn't going to work because the cable is way to long??
