Hello there, I am new to the site and already find myself like a kid in a candy store with all of its insightful contents! I'm going into my senior year and i've just purchased this 73 charger 318. It's my first classic, and man after driving it for about a month now, I feel great about all of the work that i had (and will still) have to do to keep this beauty. Ive got 3 years at a trade school to support me but as far a car restoration I am pretty much lost.
Everyone I have talked to has told me to keep the car all original for when I go to sell it down the road, but I can already tell I do not plan on it. So therefore I want to put what I like into it, and not necessarily all original parts and such. I would like to start working on it, I was thinking of starting at the interior, and maybe working from the top, down, then going to the exterior with paint and finding any missing chrome and throwing in a few little performance toys (intake, headers, starter) along the way for some fun. But having be my first classic I figured i'd like to hear some advice from some veterans at what a good plan might be. The cars in great overall shape, a bit of rust here and there, and an oil leak that looks like a blown head gasket, but overall runs and drives great. Opinions are welcomed, and i thank you all for creating such an informative site:toothy5:

Welcome to the site!! Very nice looking Charger! I think you'll find a lot of useful information you may need and the guys/ gals here are the best anywhere, friendly and helpful, There's a few members with these Chargers here so you'll be right at home.. enjoy...

Well...nice car...

..with the painted bumper (and 72 taillights) it's already no longer original...and I doubt it came with those p.ainted wheels (tha tlook like 15s) and dog dish caps...but these are "bolt ons".

If you try to limit the cutting and drilling, and stick with bolt on parts, you should be able to keep most of the "originality" value intact.

I didn't really want to drill holes in my virgin passenger door to facilitate a right hand mirror, but with the way people drive today, I just had to.
I used OEM rallye mirrors, and they look like they belong there.

I agree.. very sharp looking car and I'd drive the piss out of it as you go. Probably want to take a look at that head gasket first?

Other than that I'd start with the interior as you were mentioning... it's the easiest to work with.

I have paint scheduled next spring so I'm planning to pull the motor to freshen up the paint and have the transmission rebuilt.

Thank you all:) car is going into the shop tomorrow morning to get the leak checked as well as a good look at everything else! As for the lights bumper and wheels, I did know that they were painted and changed for whatever reason but wasn't even thinking about that, so thanks for pointing that out! And the interior is going to get a full new look, that will stay ultimately original (but different color scheme) with the adddition of perhaps a hidden more modern radio. The first body work I plan on doing is removing the vinal top to see what the roof looks like, and the vinal will be replaced with a mock two tone paint job to replicate the vinal look with paint that I prefer much more. I'll keep updating! Thanks all

I remember this car, I think it was in CT (it was, I can see the plate in the first pic)and for sale as part of an estate liquidation. From what I recall, it needed very little - clean, clean car. To be honest, I would not change much. And anything that you DO change, I would keep all of the parts in case you decide to change it back.

If you do not see any bubbling under the vinyl it would probably be a good idea to leave it alone, and there is a lot of extra trim with that style top, so that means more holes to weld and fill. Make it yours but I wouldn't go crazy. And with the mods you are suggesting, you will hurt the value. I think the interior was pea green, so I am sure that does not do the job for a high school kid these days. I would find a way to change out some of it for black, but leave some green behind as well - just tone it down a bit. Easier on the wallet, for sure.

You can always add the hide-away grille, change the wheels, change the stance, add a six pack hood, and have a totally different car, BUT, all those things can be changed back in a weekend. If you need any help just ask, I'm sure you will find a lot of info here.

i think it looks stealth the way it is...love the steelies!!! but a 6 pak hood and hideaways would bring it over the top!:headbang:
