Hi, I helped a friend install a new Yukon 3rd member with 3.55 gears and a sure grip (using Royal Purple gear oil and a bottle of ford modifier) in 69 Super Bee, and it whines while accelerating. Has anyone else who has installed a new Yukon 3rd member getting a whine while accelerating that goes away when you take your foot off the gas?. Would adding more modifier make the whining go away? Thanks.

Did you get a photo of the mesh pattern when you purchased the pig? Gear whine upon load or unload is a problem with ring and pinion mesh/improper set-up. And no lube can make it correct.

Pinion gear that is too deep means noise on coast....pinion gear that is too shallow means noise on accel....

yes, I know if the pinion is off, it will cause a noise. I was just wondering if anybody else on B Body Only has a problem with a new Yukon 3rd member that was making a whining noise. He called Yukon about it, and they want him to take it apart and send pictures. I thought I saw Wayne (Dadsbee) had a problem with a new Yukon diff they installed in his wife's Dart that was making a noise. Just so when he contacted Yukon again he could say other people were having the same problem, and it was not his fault, They were suggesting that he never broke it in properly and that was the cause of the noise. I like how these companies always say it was somebody else and not them that caused the problem. I posted on other websites about this and got some replies back about their problems with new Yukon 3rd members.

If gears are set up right, they are quiet right off the bat but these days, foreign made gears (especially junk from China) are questionable. How loud is the whine and how many miles are on them now? Funny how the factory can build vehicles and the majority of them don't get broke in right but are still quiet.

He has about 500 or so miles on them now, it’s not too bad of a whine, but compared to his last set of gears it is noticeable. I told him not to worry about it and go have some fun, smiles per miles.

Some gear sets are just garbage, no matter how well they are set up.
But my friend who owned a rearend shop (street cars and race cars) refused to use synthetic gear oil. Would not offer ANY warrantee if the customer insisted. Used Torco Dino oil by the 55 gallon drum.
Before I did anything else, and before driving makes it worse, I'd change to dinosaur oil and Motorcraft friction modifier. It may not help..... but it might.

A few years ago I had to install new gears in my 3/4 ton D70. I hit the numbers but they whine starting at 55 and it goes away at 65.

They are all hand assembled with a combination of parts. So of course there may be some that have a whine. It's all in the law of probability
