Hello Everyone!

First off, I have learned so much from these forums, you all are amazing people putting in time and effort into all of your responses. I can not express my appreciation enough for how helpful these forums have been.

That being said, I am woefully new to rebuilding cars and this may be a silly question, but I havent been able to find the information I have been looking for in older posts.

I have a 8 3/4 741 rear end. It leaks from the pinion seal and to the best of my knowledge, has never been worked on. The numbers are from 2 years newer than the car so I believe it was a replacement at some point. I had no issues with it when I drove it back in 2005, but I also did not know enough to notice any issues.

I am curious as to if I should do an overhaul kit ($300) or just replace all the seals. Is there something specific I should be looking for to see if I need to overhaul it? Are there common issues that I can look for at this point?

Thank you all for any assistance, my apologies if this is too newbie of a question or if I have overlooked another place where this information is readily available.

Just replace the pinion seal, no need to look for trouble if there's no other leaks.

:welcome: aboard.
I agree that you only have a 741 differential and at this point just a seal replacement. If it needed more work it would be better to spend the money on a stronger model differential like the 742. The 489 model seems to be everyone's "Nirvana" but they are really overpriced because of the "mystique". The 742 is just as strong and much more economical. Here are some link to differentials for more information.

And do you have a Factory Service Manual to guide you on your seal repairs ? If not I will post a link for that as well.

This is amazing! Thank you all so much! I have indeed contacted Dr. Diff and will be ordering the seal kit. Going with the old "if its not broken dont fix it" mentality. I really appreciate all of your responses!
