Horrible! What can make a water tank explode? He was welding, but what exploded?? Is there some fuel source?

That was lift off. I didnt know a tank would do that.

I've seen a storage tank or two "oil can" (implode) in my time in the fire sprinkler business,
but I've never seen one do THAT.
Good Lord. Prayers for the families!

Yeah, I think as both Big Bad Dad and moparedtn elude too, a fuel source was present.
A 1-Million gallon tank, that is huge!

Hydrogen sufide gas. Its caused by the chemical breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen
Better known as swamp gas.
Safety protocol was not followed on this job.

Good lord. That was terrible. Methane gas builds up in those tanks. Small amounts of algae on the sides of the tank can put out a ton of gas in a confined space. Since it was drinking water the tanks were probably sealed and vented via a contained system. Poor fellow.

that sucks

my condolences go out to the families
May the contractor guy who died RIP
