oil filter fitment problem

I use Fram air filters, but I wouldn't touch a Fram oil filter if I had a free lifetime supply.

Did the old filter gasket stay on the engine or did it come off on the filter? What you described looks just like an issue I've seen in the past where the old gasket remained on the oil filter mount (where the filter attaches) causing too little clearance for the new filter to bite the threads.

Hi all,
I have a 440 in my charger and I have always used a mobil one filter (M1-301A) for every oil change and it has worked without a problem. For some reason, this time it would not grab the threads and screw on. I exchanged it thinking that maybe it was a bad filter because the old one still went on fine. Again, the new one would not fit. So I tried a K & N filter (HP-3001) and it did not go on either (won't grab threads). I noticed a little bit of a burr on the first thread so I got a die and ran it back and forth several times and it cleaned the threads up really nice. I tried to put the new filter on again and it still wouldn't go, but the old filter will. When I put the filter on, it only turns about a half turn or 3/4 of a turn until the gasket bottoms out on the housing, and that has always seemed different to me because with other vehicles I always get 3 or 4 turns of the filter before the gasket makes contact. So it is as if I need a filter where the female threads sit higher or almost even with the gasket instead of recessed down.
Super frustrated...any wisdom out there?
Thanks

Agreed, Wix/Napa all the way...platinum is high line for synth oil...silver is an economical us made quality product ...gold is the easy choice.

I also have a Mopar performance (not regular mopar) filter that I’m going to try although it’s pricey relative to a good nap and gold.

I work at Advance Auto Parts and Fram has just come out with 2 new oil filters. Don't know anything about them yet. They are a premium filter and will be going on our shelves new week. For the longest time Advance had stopped carrying Fram products all together. One of our main suppliers is Trico so it doest surprise me to see we are going to carry these filters again. On a different note Advance in December last year also bought the Die Hard name as well and these batteries will be coming to our shelves next month.
My go to filter has been the Purolator Boss filter. Its designed for full synthetic oil and is very well made.

Yes, it came off...for some reason, K & N and mobil one were too far down to grab the threads. I ended up getting a fram ultra synthetic xg8a. Most of these guys are crucifying me for getting a fram but what good is a filter if you can't get it on the car? I went to Napa and got a Napa Gold the other day so next time I have the car up in the air I might go ahead and switch it out.

I've never had any issue with Fram products. For these older engines, you change the oil annually anyway, so unless the filter explodes, there should be no need for higher end products.

Right...I probably drive it 1000 - 1500 miles a year. I don't have a problem using a higher end product and I prefer to on this car. I would have stayed with Mobil one or K & N if it would have threaded on.

My buddy has used fram filters on everything he has owned since the mid 70s. His 440 powered race car pegs the oil pressure gauge at 100 lbs cold, 85 warmed up to 160 degree’s. 100 going down the track. He has tried a few different gauges and they all read the same. Ppl laugh at him, but so far he has had the last laugh. This car races 3 or 4 times a year since the mid 80s. Kim
