Swapping out an oil pan and tube on a 1977 440 and having a trouble with the correct oil pick up tube. I had a Moroso deep pan and I’m installing a 440/Hemi pan with a Melling 63-S3 which should be correct. However, the thread size on the old pick up is considerably larger. Does anyone know if a ‘77 440 block has a larger thread hole than a ‘68-73? Or did a PO modify the hole?

If the PO modified yours to 1/2" pickup that's good for you. Just buy a Hemi pickup for your new pan.

Basically, wedges use a 3/8" pick up and Hemi's use a 1/2" pickup.
The new pick up I bought and in the picture is 3/8" which is why I'm not sure if this block has been modified or a '77 block takes a different thread size.

Yes, the previous owner installed a larger diameter pickup tube. You're looking at the difference in your left hand and can see the difference. The Melling 63-S3 is an OEM replacement that is 3/8"NPT (approx. tube diameter 1/2") and if you measure the large tube end of the Moroso tube, you will find it to be about 3/4" diameter for a 1/2"NPT pickup. By changing back to a 440/hemi oil pan from whatever source will hopefully require a Hemi pickup which came originally 1/2"NPT. Mancini Racing has a selection of 1/2" pickup tube, but the correct tube will depend on the pan depth. Melling does not support 1/2"NPT pickup tubes.

All 350/361/413/383/400/440's came with 3/8", doesn't matter what year. All 426 Hemi's came with 1/2". You are better off with 1/2". Enjoy.

He modified the pickup at the block. What (whos) pan are you trying to fit up? If its a moroso or milodon, theyll have an exact pickup to match in 1/2" for your chosen pan.

Thank you. The Hemi/440 pan is only 5" deep.

If you can weld, everything you need to make this work is in your hand in post #1. Otherwise, Mancini should have an exact fit for you, and may be the better economic choice if you sell all the leftovers you arent going to use for this build.
