Oil pump drive shaft damage

This is a 78 440 out of a motor home. I spruced it up a little and had a cam failure at about 1000 miles. Has anyone seen this damage before. It looks as bad as it is. Almost like its threaded.
I want to make sure all bases are covered going back together.

Yeah, not sure why the gear looks that way in the pic. Its going to be replaced with a composite gear.
 
I have seen that...more than once. Aftermarket pump drives are made of 4130 moly steel or similar. It is hard steel, but not hardened. Made this way so that they have some 'give'....will twist a little but not snap like a carrot like the hardened factory shaft. Downside is the wear with a brass bush. You need the alum bush.
 
I think he's concerned about the gear not so much the shaft.
