old dirt bike memories

My first "dirt" bike was actually a road bike with a knobby front tire, a Bridgestone 100, then I had a Yamaha 125 enduro, then switched to street bikes and bought a `79 Suzuki GS750E. I `ve had a bunch since then, quit riding street bikes years ago and although I currently have a `78 PE250 Suzuki I`m too old and decrepit to ride much more than around the back yard.

After riding street bikes for some years I got back into dirt bikes when I got older (30`s), a few I had were a KDX250, a new 1999 KX250, an `87 Can AM 500 ASE. I was never a fast racer just a mediocre trail rider althugh I did try a motocross race at age 39. The Can Am was a big heavy beast and not great for New Englands tight trails but was scary fast when you could open it up.

Back in the 80's, my good friend had a kx80. He didn't get a helmet for it for probably the first year or so he owned it. He couldn't afford one at the time as he spent all his paper route money on the bike. Being teenagers and dumb, we used to tear it up on that thing. One day while riding through the trails behind the condo's where we lived, I was cruising along and ran over an old mattress that was buried under leaves. Pretty much only the inner springs were left. Well, the springs got tangled in the front wheel and I was sent flying over the handle bars. It happened so quick that I didn't know what happened until I hit the ground. Thankfully I didn't land on my head and didn't suffer any injuries - I don't know how. It took a while to untangle the wheel though. - Good times.

I, as many of us did, loved riding our two stroke bikes, but understood they were just too 'nasty' to continue and the 'cleaner' four strokes took the lead. But, a newly designed two stroke may be the ticket for a come-back.

Must disagree; none to few of us 'understood' nor even thought our two strokes were 'nasty'. That bollox was a political ploy. One might do a tiny bit of research if you care to find out who/what was behind it all...and in doing so, will find that besides the usual suspects, h**da was in on it and made some California 'legislators' wealthy in the process. One of the trillions of reasons I hate that company so badly.
KTM built a two stroke a few years ago that would pass the US statutes and several European countries laws also btw.

I still have my 1979 KE100 Kawasaki 2 stroke. It does not smoke as much with the new Lucas oil. In fact, I have never fouled a plug. In is a street bike, with street tyres. Works fine for getting Shirley and I from the camp ground to the pub and back.
