on a automatic on the column. Wondering how hard it is to replace the backup light operating lever on a 67 coronet?

In the car is a whole lot harder than with the column out. Finding one is another matter. They are plastic and break easily after 54 years.

Its been many years since I've messed with the lever. Where is it located on the column?

It's down on the column about above the brake pedal. The reverse light switch has to be removed. Two or 3 philips screws, I think. Then the plastic lever should be visible. Carefully wiggle it straight down toward the firewall. Once it slides out of its holder, it has to lean to an angle to be removed. With a mirror secured above the column and a good light you may be able to replace it. At 73 I couldn't do it so I pulled the column. A pain in the butt but that is what it took for me.

Thank you. I've read where people have used a sheet metal screw in place of the plastic lever.

That may be possible, but you don't have a lot of depth before you hit something else that will interfere.

Oh gotcha. Do you have a spare operating lever you would be willing to sell?

Sorry, the reason I know how to do this is because I sold the one I took out. It really didn't make good sense though. 4 hours work for a part I sold for less than $10. I'm a bit slow, but at today's labor rates, I lost my a$$.

I think its outrageous what the originals sell for. The reason I needed to know how to replace it, is I unfortunately broke mine.

Yes they break easily. I don't know how many years they go up, but 66 was metal and won't interchange. I'm thinking 67-69. Best of luck finding one reasonably.

It may be easier to swap to a later model valve body and 3 prong neutral safety switch and rewire the back up lamps.
