Original adjustable rocker shafts

I decided to install a set of original rocker shafts that I've had for about 30 years. When inspecting them, I noticed that the rocker shaft is not notched on the bottom of the end, but notched to the side. Does anyone know which way the notch is to be placed?

These may have come from a 60's solid lifter 273. Not sure.

Do you mean Notch for oiling?? If that is it then down. But a whole faces up for timing the oil to rocker.
