overdrive for B/RB?

I was thinking about overdrive for my 73 Charger SE, but it has a 400, and I want to use a mopar trans. Are there any options for mating the A518 to the B/RB engines? Adapter plates, trans cases, etc. Anybody done it?

I'm thinking of selling my A833 OD 4speed and shifter assy with all linkage.
I believe I'm going automatic 727 in mine.

You can cut off the SB bellhousing and use an aftermarket bell from J.W. called the "Ultrabell".

You'll still have to modify the floor, rear crossmember and mount. The 518 is very thick in the area that normally would be taken up by a standard 727 tailshaft.

Another option is to bolt a GearVendors O/D to the back of a 727 and have 6 speeds.

you can modify the case itself so you do not have to modify your tunnel.. you will need a trans mount crossmember modified or fabricated... make sure you keep an eye on your pinion angle with the new crossmember. find a 518 that is a 46RH (R=rear wheel drive, H= hydraulic)

I would like to stcik with an automatic, and the gv unit is definitely too pricey for me.

Does any one make an adapter plate to bolt up the 518?

Don't know about an adapter but if you go that route you will have to do something with the flex plate to maintain converter placement with the pump plus maintain the pilot engagement in the crank. I think the starter location between big block and small block is different so maybe issues there too. The whole adapter thing can get ugly. I have seen a big block bell welded onto a 518 case and reportedly no issues. Looked like the joint area fit together well too. If you go the welding route you will need a very strong fixture to reference from the shaft center of the tranny to the surface of the bell. Definitely some engineering involved but very doable.

I'd be curious about modifying the tranny case to clear the factory hump. Meaning how much material needs to be removed or relocated to make it work. An interesting thought.

One thought I had was to just find a later lock up 727 and use that. The lock up converter may drop 3-500 RPM right there and you will have NO MODS. Not as good as an OD but less hassle, plus one might be able to build a lock up unit into a numbers matching case if that was a concern. Just a thought....
