In place of wire to help align the pushrods I've used the oil dipstick before too...
 
Just a heads up in case you are not aware of this. Before I swapped the cam on my 383 (same as the 440), I checked the FSM and was pleasantly surprised to find that I did not need to pull the heads or intake manifold. All the lifters came out through the push rod holes with a telescoping magnet.

Alot depends on the condition of the engine. Old, high mile engines usually have a bunch of varnish built up around the lower end of the lifter making it really hard to remove the old lifters. Also, with old engines the valve stem seals may have hardened and broken off.
I did a cam, lifter, valve springs on an old 318 engine where all the exhaust valve stem seals had broken off, and the intake seals were really hard and brittle.
