Picking up a 70 charger hood…thoughts?

The hood on my car is fixable I believe, however it’d need the skin and frame separated and will need some patch work. I found a hood locally for a good deal, and think this’ll clean up easier. Should be picking it up tomorrow for $450. It’s got some songs and dents, and some underside rust. Hopefully mostly surface rust. What do you guys think? For $450 it seemed like a good deal, since they are one year only and there’s no AMD repros.

Does the rust along the lip usually clean up easily, or how do you guys handle that?

Sounds like a good deal. Mine needs repair at the latch area. Mice decided to shack up there, and the piss rotted it out.

The skin is good on mine, the supports are a bit crusty in areas. At some point I’ll fix it right. But even if one does pop up for sale, half the time it’s way across the country and shipping would kill any deal.

They aren’t getting any cheaper. And while not “correct”, it’s also a Charger Daytona hood. There is a carbon fiber version out there… I can only imagine how unaffordable it is.

Someone who knows how to media blast can clean up that underside nicely.

Beggars can't be choosers. I think it looks fine for the price. It should be separated and cleaned up and primed everywhere, then reassembled. The better part you start with, the better end result. I agree, shipping kills the old art of shopping around. Having a personal look and then forking over the cash is much preferred over alternatives.

It looks like it will clean up pretty good. Just strip it down and properly seal it with a good primer. After you see any imperfections after stripping it, you can take care of them.

I wish I could find a 70 hood that doesn't cost more than I paid for the whole car with a running 440....

It's not difficult to separate the hood from the frame. I soaked mine in a water and molasses mixture for de-rusting. And it came out beautiful. Epoxy primered and added louvers to get out some engine compartment heat . It gets hot in Florida. So even if you get a better hood without removing the rust , it will keep rusting within.
