possible bad converter?

I had a similar condition many years ago with a convertor that was to tight in my '64. You could floor it from a dead stop and it would almost shut-off the car. Difference is I had already had the motor dialed in but broke my good trans and it sent **** through the convertor. So this was a trans I threw in with an unknown convertor just so I could go to shows until the new one was rebuilt and the convertor cleaned. I played with the secondary pump cam and squirter which barely helped. Everything was back to normal a few weeks later when the new trans went in and the convertor was flushed. Just posting cause I don't think your thinking is out of line.

thanks QBB.. did it have that feeling like it just didn't want to go? not low power but more like it was fighting to move? My trans is fresh and everything in the car is new.. so i dont' think anything got into the TC.. just bad luck on a new one.

On the upside i know more today about converters than i did before :) been reading and learning as much as i can.

I would check all 4 wheels off the ground and make sure the brakes or even the emergency brake are free.

All free and even loosened the adjustment on the rears a little to be sure.

Does it start making good power after a certain rpm ?

obviously it must be starting in first gear but in the video am not sure I hear it shifting twice ?

It does, 2-3 actually shifts harder than 1-2.. gonna make some changes to fix that..

I was almost wondering if i have the rear band or something too tight in the trans but that wouldn't explain the no stall issue and probably would have eaten itself by now

They gave you the wrong converter maybe? Lockup converter on a non- lockup transmission?

would it even work at all then? or stay locked up in which case i would think it would basically be direct connected and stall instantly?

I'm just gonna go dump my car in dougs driveway when he's sleeping with a note that says "Fix this" :)

I would pull off the trans pan and see if there is any unusual debris in there.

yup.. plan to.. i need to put in the orifice restrictor that i somehow missed.. and am going to block the accumulator.. my last 727 hit crazy hard, i wanted this one to be a bit softer but it's a little too soft on 1-2

Plus... since i got some miles on it i wanna make sure nothing is going wrong. Whats funny is pulling a trans doesn't bug me near as much as doing stuff like putting trim back on a car

you should be able to tell something by just brake torquing it how the converter feels.

No stall, basically tries to move right away. supposed to be 3200 stall and even with my weak 320ish HP i would think it should be more than 900 stall :)

BTW... just doing research.. should i add a blocker rod or not? I see guys that swear it does not firm the shift and just puts more stress on a clutch.

"When the 1-2 upshift occurs the piston moves in the opposite direction, (AWAY from the spring) so the spring has absolutely no cushioning affect on the shift. The cushioning that the accumulator supplies on the 1-2 upshift is strictly a hydraulic function, it "accumulates" fluid to slow down the application of the kickdown band."

I'm pretty sure you got a bum converter. It happens, sometimes. I rebuilt a 727 for a customer, and he called to say there was something wrong with it, after he installed it. I went to his place to see for myself what was going on. His problem was almost the opposite of yours, however. He could rev the engine up, and the car would hardly move. At the same time, there was a weird howling noise. I told him that his converter was no good. He said it was a new higher stall piece that he had bought from a local speed shop. He took it out, and the speed shop was good enough to exchange it. The replacement converter worked fine, and he was happy with my transmission rebuild.
