Things were different 500 years ago and more, when lifespans were short and girls married at 10 years old. Even into the 1880s, the age of consent in some states and territories was 10, 12 years old. That started to change in the 1900s, but even as recent as 100 years ago in the US some customs were weird...

In January 1937, a 22-year-old man from Sneedville, Tennessee named Charlie Johns robbed the cradle and married 9-year-old Eunice Winstead. Though the mothers of Johns and Winstead initially believed that Eunice was too young to marry, they ultimately decided to approve of the marriage. Life Magazine penned an article about the marriage the month following the wedding. (Winstead's mother had married at the age of sixteen, and her sister Ina married at thirteen, by the way.) Even though at the time of their marriage Tennessee had no minimum age for marriage, in response to Johns and Winstead's marriage, the state introduced a law setting the minimum age of marriage at sixteen. The couple had nine children, her first born at 14 years old in 1942. The marriage lasted until Charlie died in 1997. Eunice passed in 2006…
