Power Mirrors Anyone?

I have the cable remote mirror on the driver side, but the passenger side mirror always needs adjusted and is a pain to deal with. I was wondering if anyone has gutted a late model power mirror set up and retrofit it in our mirrors?

Is your mirror tight?

The OEM mirror I put on my 73 never needs adjustment and I use the passenger door frequently.

75 and up mirrors can be cable operated on the passenger's side.

I have a set that looks exactly like 71-74 mirrors, except...

They mount completely different.
Instead of two screws that go all the way through from the outside, they have three studs extending from the mirror base, and...
each stud has a hemi-spherical base about the size of a dime that sits in a recess, stamped into the 75-79 door skins.

I'm sure either the ball could be ground down (although a bit finicky of an operation to avoid the stud), or the entire stud and ball could be cut off, and holes drilled and counter sunk so they could mount like 71-74 mirrors.

IIRC they were also available in chrome or painted. Mine are painted.

That's a back burner project, though. At least until my pass side mirror decides to loosen up.

The passenger side is not pristine. I have rebuilt both and I know I had to drill out the rivets on the the passenger side swivel and replace them with machine screws. Both mirrors need adjusted on a regular basis due to the roads and getting in and out.

I have thought about trying to retrofit the guts from a 5th Avenue or other later manual car with passenger side adjustment, but it is a pain to deal with the pot metal the internals are made from. Thus it seems easier to get rid of that all and use power motors from a later model (but pre-CAN bus) car.

well the 75/79 mirrors don't really look EXACTLY to 71/74... the pedestal just not mounts diff but also looks diff. Of course hard to notice for an "untrained" eye.

NOW... you can get a driver side remote system and install the system on a passenger side mirror housing. Need to drill some parts, remove and reattach the wires from joystick and the Joystick system will need to be mounted on door, just like driver piece ( 75/79 are designed to fit down the dash around the center ). I know because I modify a passenger side mirror to fit a remote system from a driver mirror donor.

i guess could be made the same using a 75/79 passenger side system on a 71/74 mirror housing.

here is an example of a guy offering the 75/79 onto 71/74. Note the pedestal on mirrors being bulkier and more squarish than the 71/74
