Hey all,

The 383 in my Coronet has always whined a little, but now it is becoming much more pronounced. I have powe steering, in case that info is helpful. It sounds a little bit like I have an whiny belt drive supercharger under the hood, LOL.

The belts seem tight and only show some wear though I may replace them. Is there a usual culprit for whine that is constant (and increases with rpms)?

What should be my first step to diagnosing and remedying this? Funds are low as I search for a new job so advice would be especially helpful if it doesn't include buying new pulleys.

Thanks in advance.

The first step is to pull all of the belts and spin each pulley one at a time, look for sloppy bearing, rough turning pulleys, etc. The other big possibility is the alternator, you could have an electrical issue with something shorted causing the alternator to work hard. You can just remove the alternator belt alone and see if it goes away and if not remove the other to narrow it down. Could possibly be an issue with the pressure relief in the power steering pump too but removing the belts one at a time should at least give you a clue as to where to look. Good luck

Also you can use a Scotch Brite pad on the belts to get the glaze off, being extra careful as I'm sure you don't want a new nickname.

Yes..ps full...belts don't look glazed. I guess I'll check the bearings of the ps, alternator, and water pump and see if that gives me more info. Thank you for the advice.

Do you have a harbor freight near by? They sell stethoscopes. Other places may too, but i got mine at HF for 3 bucks. They are awesome for checking for things like this

Product called 'Belt Ease'. Quiets them as long as there's no other issue. NAPA should have it. In a pinch, a bar of soap wiped against the side of the belts can help.

I will try both getting a stethoscope and belt ease first before removing belts. Thanks to all. Great advice.
