Hello,
I have a 1968 roadrunner with a 383 and a 4 speed. It is a 71 motor (in it when purchased) and custom built brewer 833 transmission to make the engine work with the mounts in the car. The engine is getting some long over due work and it needs to come out. Would it be easier to somehow slide the motor forward and just lift it up? Or unbolt the driveshaft and take the trans out with it? The trans is not getting any work done on it. Also there is no heater in the car, so am I missing anything other than remove hood, pull radiator, unbolt trans from engine (or driveshaft from transmission), unbolt headers, disconnect coil, pull carb, lift out?

Sorry if this is in the wrong spot, newb on here and couldn't find this info anywhere.

When I removed my motor I took the transmission and driveshaft out from under the car and took the motor out from the top. In my opinion it's much easier to do it this way so you have more room to move the motor around when lifting it up from the engine bay.

Good Luck

Thanks. Could I leave the trans in and just the motor straight up? Sorry I'm new with going this in depth into cars.

Done it that way before. Pull water pump housing and get some more room. Rember to support front of trans.

Thanks for the advice, hopefully it goes smooth.

Not sure how equipped you are but dropping the trans from below onto a floor jack then pulling the motor straight up makes more sense to me.

You can angle the whole engine/trans unit out the top but you end up with more dings on the firewall, inner fenders, etc. if you're not extremely careful.

Just got mine back in a couple weeks ago... lifted the engine, transmission and all back into the car.
Just the same way I took it out .
It can go very smoothly if you have a couple friends to help.
The only thing that got scratched was a little bit of paint on one side of the oil pan against the k-frame but I already fixed that.

You said it's a 4 speed, so you'll have to deal with the bellhousing, flywheel and clutch still being attached to the motor. I'm not sure how much work you plan on doing but it's not that bad to drop the motor, trans, and entire front suspension all at once....

I don't know what's involed in dropping front suspension but I'd like to keep it under the car. The car is going into storage monday. Planning on having a flat bed grab it and take it there assuming I get it out this weekend.

My 68 is a 4 speed car also. I have pulled the motor 4 times now since 1978. Drop the tranny. The bell housing will clear fine with a little focus.

I was able to pull my motor and 4spd trans together without taking the hood off on my 73 RR. You'll lose a bit of fluid out of the tranny though.

My 69 is a 440 and 727 and I've only done it one time like you suggest by breaking them apart and taking them out separately.
To each his own, but for me, it is much easier to pull and replace as one unit than fighting it underneath the car trying to separate the two so that's the way I like to do it nowadays.
As long as you have a couple people to help it's a piece of cake!

Got it out today, it was easier than expected. Only took about 5 or 6 hours. Ended up taking out the engine and trans together.
