push button trans cable removal

I'm removing the engine and transmission from my 64 Fury this weekend to paint the car and replace seals in the engine. It is a 318 poly and 727 push button trans. What is the best and easiest way to remove the transmission cables? Should I remove them from the trans and if so how? Or should I remove them from the push button panel? I've worked on Mopars my whole life but this is my first push button car. Thanks in advance for any advice

neither is easy, just time consuming. either you take apart your dash and unhook the cables and pull them through the firewall or you dig through the grease and disconnect at the trans. if it were me, i'd disconnect at the trans.

also, you might want to buy a shop manual....

they definetly come apart at the trans better than they go back together down there sometimes they can be a slight pain to get hooked back up and adjusted just right but the shop manual makes it a lot easier.

Take them off at the trans ... much easier than fighting with the cables inside the dash. The pictures/instructions in the photos above should really help ... it's really not that hard to do.

Don't give up getting the shift cable out, can be tricky. If you pull the pan you won't be doing it blind and can see the cable/spring to unlatch with the screwdriver as shown in the service manual. You may get it first try but it may take several tries. I pull the park cable housing off the trans with cable intact then remove the cable. loosen the cable lock nut and pipe plug before removing the housing.Your going to change that gasket anyway to seal up the tranny,,,(Along with sealing the engine?) they love to drip at the park cable housing.

I got the cables unhooked this evening. I pulled the pan to unhook the shift cable. I was going to pull the pan anyway to replace the filter. I was able to get the park cable unhooked through the Allen plug hole. It only took about 1/2 hour, not as bad as I thought it would be. Thanks for all the help.

I mounted a '64 shiffter between the buckets and and hookinh fron the sifter is a breeze.

What if all you are working on is the engine - Possible to pull the engine and leave the tranny in place cables and all?
