Putting my rear back together and decided to run a tap thru the axle mounting nuts because they wouldnt thread up by hand.Did I ruin these nuts?are they supposed to be like the ones that are egged a little so they wont back off, If I ruined these can I go to the hardware store and get some with the nylon inserts?

Are you discussing axle flange nuts?
If they are mechanical locknuts they will have some deformation, typically on the "top" of the nuts. Look in the ID's at the top and determine if your tap cleaned up two spots across from one another indicating a lock being removed.
Best to use exact replacements.
I'd stay far from any Ny-lock locknut.

I do see that DrDiff sells the nylocks. I don't care for them myself.
Some images of top lock nuts..........

Yeah my tap cleared them up good, they run up with your fingers now, looks like I need to get some new ones.

There are a handful of different types of all steel self-locking nuts, including ones with built one 'washers'. You can find them at any good hardware store.

I've also seen them with small rectangles stamped in 2 of the 6 the sides.

That's really the only indication on those as they're "pinched" where those rectangles are.

Use some grade 8 fine thread 3/8 nylock nuts. You won't have any problems.
