Hello, i have a question regarding typical painting process in regards to a complete restoration. The guy doing my bodywork/paint on my 69 RR tells me that its best to cut in the car painting the engine bay, jams, trunk, chassis, etc. We would then put the suspension, drive train and plumbing in. Once everything is in he would then finish the painting on the remaining body areas. Whats everyone's thoughts on this method of doing things? What is the advantage of doing it this way if any? I was kind scratching my head on the advantage of this method. As for me, i just want the car painted asap as its been a way too long waiting for paint. Thanks!

It is hard to maintain a wet edge when doing a full repaint and even with a good booth the over spray will settle on all of the horizontal areas. Your paint will look better if you cut the car up when you spray it. It also helps with the chassis assembly because you can easily move the vehicle around the shop once the suspension is in so it's not tying up valuable space. Accidents happen and a lot of cars get scratched during the build and when they get repainted sections get blended into the paint job. If your painter and his prep guys knows what they are doing you won't be able to tell it wasn't all painted at once. Rarely some high metallic colors won't blend well and require a wet edge to be maintained to look best.

I'm at the point of your question right now, and will be painting in a couple of days. I have the car back on the rotisserie and all sheet metal is back off. I'll be doing basically everything except the roof, quarters and windshield cowl.

Once the chassis is back on the wagon I'll install the trimmed out fenders and doors. Lots of masking and then the next steps. That's the way I do them. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

I would want to do the paint last. It is very hard to keep from damaging new paint during assembly.........................MO
