I lived on the top of a small mountain for a few years (appx 1500 ft above sea level) in a very sparsely populated area. Everybody on the road had their mailboxes punched in or knocked over except for me.
Other things such as driveway lights taken out with BB guns and stupid **** like that happened to others but never to any of my property. While discussing this with a new neighbor and a couple of the local teens, the new guy asks why I never had a problem and says to them "you tell your friends I'm here now and I won't stand for any of this". Well, not too long after that ..... you guessed it ...... mailbox AND driveway lights were in disrepair at the new neighbors house.

Several years earlier, the weekend I moved in, I was outside in pouring rain building a roof for my uncovered porch (so I could be outside and NOT be in the pouring rain). It seems I must have made an impression on the neighbors because when I asked the teens across the road why nobody messed with my stuff (being away from the house at least 15 hours a day) he said "who is gonna' **** with a guy who uses corded power tools in a downpour and drives 90 miles each way to Brooklyn every day?"

I'm no badass but that was a first impression I was glad to have made!
