Not totally without merit-

They're light
They handle well (possibly better than a same year corvette)
They could be had with a 302 (extremely easy to build and make good power)

No 302 for 1974, just V6 or inline four power. The only year Mustang that had no V8 option at all.

But despite what people say about the Mustang II, Ford was in it for the money. They sold 418,812 of them that year, three times as many as the porky 1973 model.
