I was there in 1964. Family vacation, drove from PA in a '56 Dodge wagon. Part way home, fried one of the leads from the coil. Every hundred miles, dad stopped and changed the tape on a jumper wire he got at a gas station, and we made it home.

You're right, all those exposed body parts would be falling off. To this day, I still have a few fingers that feel funny when they get to cold.
